Valfair Construction is in search of a welder to join the Fence Crew. The welder will work directly under the Fence Crew Superintendent and will weld fence materials according to the job site specifications along with directions from the job site supervisor.

  • Experience with stick welding on iron and galvanized steel
  • Fencing install on multiple job sites
  • Fabricating fencing materials to meet job needs
  • Properly follows company safety procedures. Brings problems to the attention of the foreman, superintendent, safety director or HR manager.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to the supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and criminal background check
  • Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Occasional O.T. as needed
  • HS diploma or GED preferred

Overview

The Tack Welder will ensure tack welds are made strong enough to sustain the stressors affecting them. Will hold in place the assembled components, complement the function of a fixture and permit the assembly removal from it if necessary.

Controls and contrasts component movement and distortion of the structure during welding, and temporarily ensures the assembly’s mechanical strength when hoisted, moved, manipulated or overturned, if designed for that purpose.

Must possess the ability to set up equipment and weld either pipe, plate or structural steel using arc, gas-shielded arc, or gas welding equipment.

Will obtain certification as necessary. Must learn and understand all safety hazards related to the work and also learn to safely and effectively use or operate work related tools and equipment.

Will be required to work in a plant operations or construction jobsite setting.

Responsibilities

  • The following are intended as general illustrations of the work in this job class and are not all-inclusive for this position.
  • Work with fabricator to locate fittings and pipe needed to fabricate the spool on the ISO
  • Operate cleaning of pipe and fittings with power and air tools
  • Perform simple piping installations and repairs
  • Assist in fitting of spools to be fabricated
  • Use torch for preheating if required
  • Assist other mechanics / craft workers as needed

Job Description

SUMMARY Combination - Capable of certifying on multi-process pipe being proficient in SMAW, GTAW and GMAW welding processes.

May require x-ray qualities.

Lays out, aligns and welds fabricated, cast and forged components to assemble structural forms

such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings and pipe, according to blueprints and metallurgy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Selects type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications.
  • Selects equipment and plans layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage and welding techniques.
  • May be required to use Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns and fits components together in various body positions.
  • Bolts, clamps and welds together metal components of products such as piping systems, plate, pipe and tube or structural shapes, using arc and arc gas welding equipment.

May weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead position. May tack weld assemblies together.

  • Connects cable from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope and pulse as specified by procedure or supervisor.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld-line, maintaining length of arc and speed and movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • May manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal. May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath.

May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes. May remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using carbon arc gouge, hand scrapper, grinder or power chipper.

May preheat work piece, using hand torch or heating furnace. May cut metal plates or structural shapes.

  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies.
  • May assist in lifting, positioning and securing of materials and work pieces during installation.
  • Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
  • Assists other mechanics as needed.
  • Respiratory protection is common and may be required.
  • Required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards. Performs only procedures certified in.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules. Performs other duties as required.

Occupation as an Industrial Pipe Welder, under the direction and supervision of designated Field Foreman, General Foreman or Superintendent(s), duties include but are not limited to a strong understanding of industrial piping systems, including installation, maintenance, and repair.
