Position Summary
Under general direction of the Chief Mechanic; Performs specialized metal fabrication and welding required to maintain, modify and repair the Districts rolling stock, facilities and passenger amenities and miscellaneous equipment.
Occasionally performs other duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities
- Operates, but not limited to; shear, roll, ironworker press brake, drill press, band saw, used for cutting, bending, drilling, shaping, rolling, and punching
- Utilizes handheld tools such as a hand-held screw gun, drill gun, and grinders
- Operates calipers, weld gauges, tape measures, and other welding hand tools
- Maintains weld machines using preventative maintenance methods
- Reads, interprets, and follows blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, specifications, weld symbols, bills of materials, and other written instructions or procedures to accurately create equipment and products
- Maintains inventory of manufacturing product and welding consumables
- Creates specific weldment set-ups and fixtures to meet geometric requirements
- Performs quality work checks to ensure the product meets quality standards
- Reworks and / or repairs welded parts and products according to engineering specification
- Responsible in work order generation and record keeping in the District’s asset management system (IBM Maximo) occasionally performs other duties as assigned
- Adheres to the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service
- Performs additional related duties as assigned
- Regular and reliable attendance and performance are required
Ideal Candidate
Minimum Qualifications
Education and / or Experience Equivalent to :
- Four (4) years of recent full-time position related experience in welding and metal fabrication
- Experience in overhead hoist operations, power tool usage, machine operations (shear brake, ironworker, and radial saws), hydraulic equipment operation, and electric, air and battery-operated drills
- Experience in the use of electrical tools, equipment, and the measurements necessary to meet established standards
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Skilled in or Ability to :
- Thermal Cutting and using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (MIG, TIG, stick welding, chain and sling -rigging equipment
- Using electrical or manual tools (i.e. saws, squares, calipers etc.)
- Metal identification, test equipment operation, blue print analysis and equipment assembly
- Read and interpret technical documents and drawings
- Use shear, roll, ironworker press brake, drill press, band saw, used for cutting, bending, drilling, shaping, rolling and punching
- Operate all types of welding equipment
- Read, understand, follow and / or apply technical oral and written instructions, blueprints
- Utilize all required PPE
- Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships
- Perform computerized data entry and basic business office technology functions such as use of email, data entry, work order processing and materials requisition

Our shop is a R&D operation, making mostly one-off and small quantity runs. This is not a production environment we rarely make more than ten or twenty of anything.
We fabricate using mostly stainless steel, aluminum, and copper, plus other materials that can be very challenging to form and / or weld.
Part and / or feature sizes range from less than a millimeter to a few meters.

The Fun Stuff
We have a MillerMatics, a couple of Miller Dynastys, Miller Aerowaves, a spot welder, several weld booths, a semi-clean, HEPA filtered welding environment, an inert atmosphere glove-box welding environment, a Bluco weld fixturing table, and various shears, presses, rolls, punches, etc.
Much of our fabrication work is challenging, with complex geometries, tight tolerances, and weld joints with specification for very low leak rates.
You’ll work in a spacious, well-equipped shop and enjoy support from our extensively equipped machine shop, which includes a CNC waterjet machine.
What You Will Do :
- Design and fabricate work-piece fixtures for forming and joining of a wide variety of scientific apparatus, including vacuum chambers, cryostats, accelerator components and instrumentation.
- Fabricate components and assemblies bearing complex geometry, difficult to work materials, and specification for extreme precision.
- Use computers and CAD systems to work with native electronic drawings, solid models, and generic file formats such as dxf and iges.
- Decode electronic models, blueprints, sketches, parts lists, and assembly diagrams.
- Apply GD&T knowledge to understand symbols and terminology that comprise datum reference frames, datum features and feature controls describing form, size, orientation, location, and surface finish to correctly decode drawings and leverage this into precisely fabricated components.
- Advise and assist professional staff and make innovative contributions in technical design and specialized applications.
What is Required :
- Journey-level knowledge, skills and abilities in welding, fabrication, and related mechanical processes theory and work practices.
- Ability to independently select, program as required, set-up and operate appropriate hand, power, and specialized tools of the sheet metal and welding trades including forming, fabricating, shape-cutting and welding machines in the manufacture of specialized and unique scientific components, assemblies, equipment and systems.
- Extensive knowledge, skill and work experience in performing highly complex layouts, set-ups and forming and joining operations in the precision fabrication of extremely close-tolerance scientific components, assemblies, equipment and systems while utilizing uncommon materials including but not limited to tantalum, titanium, molybdenum, copper, Inconel, tungsten, aluminum, steel and stainless steel metals and alloys.
- Ability to design, fabricate modify and implement unusual and unique fixturing strategies, systems and techniques.
- Ability to perform High and Ultra High Vacuum welding operations utilizing both common and uncommon materials, equipment, techniques and processes while maintaining joint leak rates as low as 1X10-9 Atm.

- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs).

Desired Qualifications :

Tank Builder / Welder (Nationwide)
We are currently looking to hire top field welders. Join our team and become a tankee traveling throughout our beautiful country! Compensation : Hourly wage based upon experience and skill set, plus per diem (to cover meals and lodging).
Normal hourly wage paid for work-related travel (no overtime). Non-union. Occasional prevailing wage. Non-exempt. No PTO or paid holidays.
Pay periods are weekly. Direct deposit is available. Benefits : Medical, dental, and vision benefits are available on the first of the month following a 30-day probationary period.
Phillips Tank pays approximately 60% and employee pays 40% of medical benefit premiums. Employee pays 100% for vision and dental benefit premiums.
Shift : Project work schedules vary. However, a typical work shift is daylight (10 hours per day, 5 days per week). Status : Full-time employee (subject to project availability and work schedules.

Using generators, compressors, tuggers, blowers, grinders, and other power and air tools. Welding plate with 7018, 7024 and 6010 stick (SMAW), flux core (FCAW), and submerged arc automatic machines (3 o’clock and goat / tractor).
Using come-alongs, hydraulic jacks, hoists, air bags, winches, and other lifting equipment. Using tank shell buggies, tank scaffolding, tank ladders, and other specialty equipment.
Performing vacuum box tests, oil tests, dye penetrant tests, and other non-destructive quality examinations. Using gas monitors, fresh air kits, respirators, emergency rescue kits, and other safety equipment.
Operating forklifts, man lifts, boom lifts, and other large lifting equipment. Knowledge of crane operations (including rigging and signaling) Reading detailed erection and fabrication drawings.
Planning the sequence and methods of fitting up, welding, repairing, and constructing tanks. Completing job safety analysis, safety audits, site-specific training, and other safety training.
