In this exciting role, you will perform complex mechanical engineering tasks, including design and development activities in support of specific scientific and engineering programs, taking responsibility for sub-projects and sub-groups within major projects or research programs at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
These activities may include conceptualization, design, planning, implementation, and completion of assigned problems, tasks, and projects, which have a high degree of complexity and range in scope.
They will need to develop a network of key contacts outside of their own area of expertise to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
The Mechanical Engineer IV determines methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate / supervise activities of other personnel to meet objectives and goals.
Moreover, the Mechanical Engineer will conduct, coordinate, and / or make significant contributions to large projects or multiple small projects utilizing independent judgment and decision making while working within schedule and budget constraints.
What You Will Do :
- Serve as Lead Engineer by providing direction and guidance to the engineering team. The team will consist of full-time and part-time subject matter expert engineers to develop detailed engineering plans.
- Closely work with the Engineering leads.
- Provide engineering requirements to the design team.
- Use a broad array of analytical, computational, and experimental, instrumentation, and hardware design skills in the development of detailed designs.
- Independently apply engineering principles, methods and research techniques to creatively solve complex problems based on new technology.
- Establish performance criteria and specifications.
- Release assembly drawings, work instructions, check-lists and other supporting documents to facilitate clear guidelines.
- Write specifications for technically complex or challenging assemblies, procedures, and procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements.

advice on vendor qualifications, and technical details of contract or proposal verbiage.
- Develop project scope and estimate related logistics, e.g. cost estimates and assembly / installation timelines.
- Manage projects of large and medium size in scope, assuming primary responsibility for overall project success, working with project scientists to translate scientific needs into engineering concepts and specifications, overseeing schedule and budget creation and reporting, and providing critical technical direction for development and integration of project components.
- Be responsible for technical efforts to meet project deliverables.
- Supervise other engineers and designers, and serve as mentor to other engineers and technical staff.
- Coordinate and lead a diverse workforce, interface with and oversee an outside contractor work.
- May participate in the management of mid to large-scale DOE capital acquisition construction projects.
- Represent the Laboratory to the outside world in a specific specialty through participation in design reviews.
What is Required :
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering physics, or related field or equivalent experience.

Salary :
The full salary range of this position is between $11,085 to $18,707 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $12,472 to $15,242 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
