The Engineering Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) offers an exciting career opportunity for a journey-level Welder / Fabricator with experience in Ultra High Vacuum welding.
You’ll provide advanced technical support for complex and specialized assignments.
Who We Are
Our shop is a R&D operation, making mostly one-off and small quantity runs. This is not a production environment we rarely make more than ten or twenty of anything.
We fabricate using mostly stainless steel, aluminum, and copper, plus other materials that can be very challenging to form and / or weld.
Part and / or feature sizes range from less than a millimeter to a few meters.

We have expert staff in general and precision fabrication and welding, with equipment and tools that would be the envy of most shops.
We also have extensive, additional manufacturing capabilities including : machining, precision sheet metal, plating and Ultra High Vacuum cleaning, paint / powder coat, vacuum brazing, and vacuum deposition.
The Fun Stuff
We have a MillerMatics, a couple of Miller Dynastys, Miller Aerowaves, a spot welder, several weld booths, a semi-clean, HEPA filtered welding environment, an inert atmosphere glove-box welding environment, a Bluco weld fixturing table, and various shears, presses, rolls, punches, etc.
Much of our fabrication work is challenging, with complex geometries, tight tolerances, and weld joints with specification for very low leak rates.
You’ll work in a spacious, well-equipped shop and enjoy support from our extensively equipped machine shop, which includes a CNC waterjet machine.
What You Will Do :
- Design and fabricate work-piece fixtures for forming and joining of a wide variety of scientific apparatus, including vacuum chambers, cryostats, accelerator components and instrumentation.
- Fabricate components and assemblies bearing complex geometry, difficult to work materials, and specification for extreme precision.
- Use computers and CAD systems to work with native electronic drawings, solid models, and generic file formats such as dxf and iges.
- Decode electronic models, blueprints, sketches, parts lists, and assembly diagrams.
- Apply GD&T knowledge to understand symbols and terminology that comprise datum reference frames, datum features and feature controls describing form, size, orientation, location, and surface finish to correctly decode drawings and leverage this into precisely fabricated components.
- Advise and assist professional staff and make innovative contributions in technical design and specialized applications.
What is Required :
- Journey-level knowledge, skills and abilities in welding, fabrication, and related mechanical processes theory and work practices.
- Ability to independently select, program as required, set-up and operate appropriate hand, power, and specialized tools of the sheet metal and welding trades including forming, fabricating, shape-cutting and welding machines in the manufacture of specialized and unique scientific components, assemblies, equipment and systems.
- Extensive knowledge, skill and work experience in performing highly complex layouts, set-ups and forming and joining operations in the precision fabrication of extremely close-tolerance scientific components, assemblies, equipment and systems while utilizing uncommon materials including but not limited to tantalum, titanium, molybdenum, copper, Inconel, tungsten, aluminum, steel and stainless steel metals and alloys.
- Ability to design, fabricate modify and implement unusual and unique fixturing strategies, systems and techniques.
- Ability to perform High and Ultra High Vacuum welding operations utilizing both common and uncommon materials, equipment, techniques and processes while maintaining joint leak rates as low as 1X10-9 Atm.

- Ability to independently accomplish highly complex assignments involving high-value laboratory scientific
- components, assemblies, equipment and systems of unusual and unique design, by exercising independent judgment and following supervision guidance essentially limited to general assignment parameters, budgets, and timelines.
- Ability to read and correctly decode blueprints, sketches, parts lists, layout and assembly drawings and operation,calibration and repair manuals.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders, work from heights and confined spaces, and lift 23 kg (50 lbs).
- General personal computer application skills with spreadsheets, databases and word processors and other business applications.
Physical aspects of the position : May need to stand for long periods of time, climb stairs and ladders, and move / lift 50 lbs.
Desired Qualifications :
- An equivalent to an AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, successful completion of formal Welder and / or Sheet Metal Worker apprenticeship program(s), or the equivalent in formal industrial or military training is preferred.
- Experience in glove-box welding techniques on Ultra-High Vacuum components, composed of common and / or uncommon materials, with resulting leak rates of 1X10-9 Atm.

- Ability to view, modify and create electronic CAD / CAM data for use in both design and manufacturing.
- Certified in ASME Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

- This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

- The salary for this position is $57.82 / hour. The hourly wage for this position is predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements set rates.

Senior Mechanical Engineer
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s () Division has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Mechanical Engineering team.

This is an exciting position where you will be working with a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians to support world class research efforts across a variety of disciplines.
You will be working with, developing, and troubleshooting equipment operating under unique environments and will develop the skills to help the ALS achieve its scientific goals.

In this exciting role, you will perform complex mechanical engineering tasks, including design and development activities in support of specific scientific and engineering programs, taking responsibility for sub-projects and sub-groups within major projects or research programs at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
These activities may include conceptualization, design, planning, implementation, and completion of assigned problems, tasks, and projects, which have a high degree of complexity and range in scope.
They will need to develop a network of key contacts outside of their own area of expertise to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
The Mechanical Engineer IV determines methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate / supervise activities of other personnel to meet objectives and goals.
Moreover, the Mechanical Engineer will conduct, coordinate, and / or make significant contributions to large projects or multiple small projects utilizing independent judgment and decision making while working within schedule and budget constraints.
What You Will Do :
- Serve as Lead Engineer by providing direction and guidance to the engineering team. The team will consist of full-time and part-time subject matter expert engineers to develop detailed engineering plans.
- Closely work with the Engineering leads.
- Provide engineering requirements to the design team.
- Use a broad array of analytical, computational, and experimental, instrumentation, and hardware design skills in the development of detailed designs.
- Independently apply engineering principles, methods and research techniques to creatively solve complex problems based on new technology.
- Establish performance criteria and specifications.
- Release assembly drawings, work instructions, check-lists and other supporting documents to facilitate clear guidelines.
- Write specifications for technically complex or challenging assemblies, procedures, and procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements.
- Provide technical oversight to procurement staff, e.g. technical aspects of drawings, understanding of technical issues;
advice on vendor qualifications, and technical details of contract or proposal verbiage.
- Develop project scope and estimate related logistics, e.g. cost estimates and assembly / installation timelines.
- Manage projects of large and medium size in scope, assuming primary responsibility for overall project success, working with project scientists to translate scientific needs into engineering concepts and specifications, overseeing schedule and budget creation and reporting, and providing critical technical direction for development and integration of project components.
- Be responsible for technical efforts to meet project deliverables.
- Supervise other engineers and designers, and serve as mentor to other engineers and technical staff.
- Coordinate and lead a diverse workforce, interface with and oversee an outside contractor work.
- May participate in the management of mid to large-scale DOE capital acquisition construction projects.
- Represent the Laboratory to the outside world in a specific specialty through participation in design reviews.
What is Required :
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering physics, or related field or equivalent experience.
Normally 8+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience in managing projects of medium scale.
- Experience in technical management; demonstrated superior design performance and application / development of state-of -the-art technology in relevant engineering areas
- Experience leading and supervising others effectively in a team environment.
- Demonstrated extensive knowledge in engineering integration (mechanical and electrical), mechanical design and fabrication.
The lead engineering role is typically acquired with 8+ years of experience.
- Ability to exercise, sound engineering judgment and decision making with a wide range in scope, analytical ability, and evidence of strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
- Broad background in the mechanical engineering and assembly of complex scientific apparatuses and experiments with emphasis on practical hand-on experience on overseeing assembly efforts.
- Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions and lead other scientists and engineers in defining goals and implementing activities to realize the goals.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective engineering direction and judgment for developmental work and to creatively resolve complex technical problems.
- Ability to interface and work within a large diverse team and will require excellent technical communication skills.
- Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple competing priorities and projects. Demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience accelerator or complex scientific experiment engineering design, and mechanical issues and manufacturing thereof.
- Demonstrated ability to make accurate manpower, time and expense estimates for completion of projects.
- Ability to interface with facilities and contractors to ensure code compliance for seismic bracing, electrical installation, and drill permits.
Desired Qualifications :
- M.S. or Ph.D. or equivalent experience.
- Experience in a R&D and national laboratory environment.
- Previous experience with large scale installations and / or operations and maintenance of large user facilities, complex experiments or industrial installations.
- Adaptability and desire to learn new skills and technologies.
Salary :
The full salary range of this position is between $11,085 to $18,707 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $12,472 to $15,242 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

- This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
