We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Public Finance Banker to join our Markets Business team. This role is located in Pittsburgh, PA - Hybrid (3 days in the office ).

The Markets group helps clients solve their trading, financing and liquidity needs through innovative solutions, services, market insights, industry expertise and scalable technology.

We deliver foreign exchange execution, securities finance, equity and fixed income origination and investment solutions and liquidity services.

Team & Role :

The position will be part of the Public Finance team within BNY Mellon Capital Markets. The Public Finance team provides bond underwriting, financial advisory, variable rate bond remarketing, reinvestment and other services to States, municipalities, non-profits, real estate developers, health care providers, higher educational institutions, corporate issuers with a sustainable lens and other entities around their financing needs.

The team works very closely with our Municipal Bond Trading and Underwriting Desk as well as our Securities Sales representatives.

In addition, we frequently connect with our colleagues from other Lines of Business at BNY Mellon such as Derivatives Desk, Corporate Trust, Institutional Lending, Asset Servicing and other groups.

Responsibilities :

With guidance, evaluates and pursues new business opportunities and client prospects, focusing on responsible business growth that is compliant, of acceptable risk and profitable.

Serves in a consultative role to prospects, advising top leadership on the best way to achieve their short- and long- term financing objectives through the firm’s solutions.

Prospects are located across the United States. Incumbents follow leads that come into the organization from other lines of business as well as generating leads themselves.

May assist a more senior Business Development colleague on large or complex accounts to gain breadth / depth of knowledge.

May be responsible for achieving organic incremental growth from existing clients. Locates potential prospects through in-depth industry research and an understanding of the market environment, including short- and long-term trends, fixed income market conditions, competitor offerings, regulatory developments etc.

Screens and evaluates prospects by analyzing market strategies, deal requirements, growth potential, financials and internal firm priorities.

Works with existing clients and prospects on their strategic and financial vision and uses an understanding of the firm’s solutions and value proposition to help them achieve that vision.

May help develop a negotiation strategy and position to align prospect needs to firm offerings. Assists with closing of new prospects by contributing analyses supporting deal structures (pricing, contract terms, etc.

that achieve optimal terms for both the client and the firm. Assists with ensuring that deals are compliant with all regulations.

Follows up with other firm-wide resources (marketing, legal, compliance, etc.) to gather needed information required to finalize a proposal / deal.

The successful candidate will demonstrate / possess :

  • A strong knowledge of the Public Finance market participants and mechanics, including marketing experience, deal structuring, legal documentation, federal and applicable state laws and regulations around tax-exempt and taxable debt issuance by states, municipalities and other issuers.
  • A demonstrated track record of working with states, municipalities, non-profits or other tax-exempt and taxable debt issuers on their financing needs.
  • A strong understanding of the fixed income debt markets.
  • An excellent history of regulatory compliance and understanding the regulatory requirements.
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in the Public Finance industry with an entity that is either an investment banker, municipal issuer, financial advisor, investment manager or other industry profession.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in finance, economics, political science, or other related field with a preference for an advanced degree.
  • Excellent communication skills as well as quantitative capabilities.
  • high proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Summary of Position

About The Role

What You Will Do

During the First Month :

Dive in and develop an understanding of the Niche organization, our business model, our customers, products and strategic and business priorities.

This will be accomplished by meeting with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

Within 3 Months :

  • Take ownership of the strategic budget planning process. Establish core frameworks and processes for strategic planning and embed within core business operations.
  • Partner with key business leaders to identify the highest priority business challenges and begin to address those topics with rigorous and strategic, financial and business analysis that result in new insights that will drive business decisions.

Within Six Months :

  • Partner with CFO to determine the two-year plan to build out the team based on the organization’s needs determined by learnings in the first six months.
  • Take responsibility as the quarterback’ for annual planning with strategic sessions with the CEO and leadership to understand strategic priorities, and then translate those priorities to effective communications to the broader organization that will drive OKRs and resource allocation.

Within 12 Months :

  • Build trust across the organization as the go-to’ resource to understand, analyze and make recommendations on complex and challenging business issues and opportunities.

What We Are Looking For

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in Strategic Planning, Strategic Analysis and Finance.
