Covanta Fairfax seeks a dedicated Maintenance Mechanic and Welder who will be responsible for performing various aspects of mechanical maintenance on rotation machinery and equipment, boilers and support systems, cranes, structural supports and equipment, piping systems, and more.

Maintenance Mechanic and Welder may inspect, adjust alignment, replace or rebuild pumps, replace fan bearings, replace motors, repair screw conveyors, repair soot blowers, install and modify pipelines and assist in the modification and addition of plant projects.

Qualified individual will also be proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW weld procedures. Certification under Covanta D-1-1 (ASME Structural Welder) is required within 90 days of employment.

Certification under Covanta R-1 (ASME Code Welder ) is required within one (1) year of employment.

To qualify, the Maintenance Mechanic Welder must have at least five (5) years experience in repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment and a High School Diploma (or equivalent).

Documentation of welding experience to include previous certifications are required.

Formal technical, military, and / or apprenticeship training is desired.

Proficient SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding abilities required and qualifying as a NBIC code welder within one (1) year of employment.

An understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems is required.

The Mechanic should be able to interpret mechanical drawings to assist in making repairs.

Safety is a condition of employment for Covanta employees, and as such, any candidate must have a dedication to personal safety for themselves and their coworkers.

Strong leadership and motivational skills, valid drivers license, work in close quarters and confined spaces, climb ladders and structures, tolerate heights, tolerate high temperatures, and lift up to 50 pounds also required.

Mechanic must be available to work overtime, weekends, nights, holidays and respond to call-ins as plant operations dictate.

Work will include repairs to pressure parts and overlaying tubes while working in confined spaces and be able to work in extreme weather conditions and at heights.

Upon acceptance of the position, the employee will be enrolled in a formal Maintenance Training program with deadlines and goals that are expected to be met as a condition of employment.

Purpose of the Job :

The mission and purpose of this role is critical to Cryopump manufacturing (Vessel / Cylinder) & Cryogenic Accessories Manufacturing (Flexlines / Manifolds)

Main Responsibilities :

This position will work as a member of the Cryogenics team in support of our fast-paced and dynamic manufacturing operations.

The key focus is GTAW Welding of Stainless Steel to the ASME standard.

The position responsibilities, more specifically, include :

• Gathering materials per work order
• Visual Inspection of piece parts

Training and Qualification in the following :

• Quality Plan Review
• Weld Fixture use
• Welding position
• Component identification
• Assembly drawing review
• It utilizes safety protocols to perform physical functions to include lifting 50-75 lbs
• Able to work well independently and in a team environment

Required Experience :

• High School diploma or GED required
• Must have a minimum of 2+ years’ welding experience
• Must possess Basic GTAW skills
• TIG welding experience
• Orbital Welding experience
• Welding Lathe experience
• MFG Standard 180 experience
• Weld Joint Cleaning experience
• Tungsten Grinding experience
• Able to read, write, and communicate effectively
• Must be comfortable using computer
• Must have experience with 5S, lean manufacturing
• Experience with Oracle ERP is a plus
• Experience reading assembly drawings
• Ability to perform physical functions
• Detail oriented with good basic math skills
• Willingness to learn and follow directions
• Operator must be certified to ASME standard or be trained by an ASME certified welder with an expectation of certification within a reasonable time period

This role sits within Edwards Vacuum, the CTIP Product company in Chelmsford which is part of the newly formed Semi Chamber Solutions Division within Atlas Copco’s Vacuum Technique business area.

It provides a complete range of Equipment and value-added services for customers in a range of applications & processes, depending on the market.

The customers vary from very large global accounts to small diffuse customers. The division provides products under the Edwards brands.
