Flash Butt Welder - Class A CDL

Position Summary

Mobile Intrack Welder is responsible for driving, operating, diagnosing, and maintaining a mobile electric flash-butt welding machine.

Work includes driving a welding truck (CDL required) to and from work locations and setting the welding truck on the track.

Primary / Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Will perform Intrack Welding functions.
  • Capable of performing job duties in a safe and professional manner.
  • Self-directed individual with the ability to supervise and lead a small group.
  • Responsible to report customer and production status in a professional and timely manner.
  • No prior welding experience is required.
  • Must have the ability to read precision instruments and gauges with a background in heavy mechanical / electrical machines and equipment.
  • Perform QA inspections as required.
  • Candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Candidate will set up and perform weld operations including moving jack stands into place prior to making welds, cleaning and removing ballast rocks in the work area, vehicle maintenance, and cleaning, truck movement while on track from work site to work site, grinding welds as needed.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • A valid class A driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
  • Basic computer skills
  • Track experience preferred
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of employees and customers.
  • Fill out and organize work reports
  • Must be able to travel 90% of time
  • Ability to pass drug screening and background check. High School Diploma / GED required.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Works both indoors and outdoors
  • Travels to field locations to provide repairs or maintenance
  • Frequently performs physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as standing, lifting, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, and handling of materials, equipment, and tools
  • Uses hands and fingers to operate equipment and tools involved in repairs
  • Lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries heavy objects, machinery, and tools up to 50 pounds
  • Works around vehicles and machinery with moving parts
  • Exposed to exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel
  • May be exposed to harsh weather conditions
  • May be exposed to loud noise.

The Best Connection are working with our client based in Washington. They are a well-established light engineering company and due to increases levels of business they require time served Metalworkers / Welder Fabricator.

The roles are being offered on a temporary to permanent basis for the right candidates with an immediate start.

Duties include :

  • Working with hollow section frames and material gauges between 1.5mm 10mm
  • Experience of working from engineering drawings to create own jigs
  • Producing a variety of projects within the industry from start to finish of project
  • MIG and TIG welding
  • Stick welding would be desirable but not essential

Hours of work :

  • Monday Thursday 7.45am 4.30pm
  • Friday 7.45am 1.00pm

Pay rate :

  • £14.20 per hour basic rate
  • £21.30 per hour overtime rate (time and a half)

Reporting to the Workshop Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day fabrication and welding activities, ensuring the successful delivery of all projects on time and within agreed budget.

You will be expected to take responsibility for efficient planning and utilisation of the resource available, maintenance of high standards of quality, health and safety, and liaison with the Workshop Manager

About the successful applicant

You will ideally be qualified to at least a City & Guilds Fabrication and Welding skills where excellence in service is matched by a best-in-class health & safety record.

ideally hold a CSCS card and have proven experience in a welding / fabrication environment.

You will also be required to have previous experience in the following areas where possible :

  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding
  • Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding
  • Flux Core Welding
  • Use of handheld tools including grinders
  • General Machinist
  • Ability to follow CAD engineering drawings where required and work instructions for each job
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail - Ability to fault find and rectify.

You will also be required to have a full UK driving license as the role may require you to travel to sites throughout the UK.
