PRIMARY DUTIES :
Repair, rebuild, lay out and fabricate metal parts, shapes and objects for all mechanical and electrical equipment, facilities and devices requiring the use of arc or gas welding processes necessary to maintain safe, continuous and efficient operation.
Performs duties such as :
- Pressure welding on pressure vessels and piping requiring the passing of performance qualification tests as established by Company procedures that comply with the current State of Indiana Rules and Regulations for Boilers and Unfired Pressure Vessels, as governed by Section IX, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code on welding qualifications.
- Burning, fusing, aligning, placing, repairing, chipping, cleaning, preparing and installing metal parts, shapes, pipe and objects requiring the use of arc, gas, tig or mig welding processes;
- setting up and laying out metal plates, shapes, pipe and objects preparatory to welding; preheating according to established standards to prevent stresses that would otherwise accumulate during the welding operation;
- post-heating according to established standards to relieve residual stresses due to the welding operation;
- Cutting metals with oxy-acetylene, plasma or arc welding equipment;
- Selecting the proper weld rod and flux for the metal to be welded; working from blueprints, sketches, field measurements and specifications;
- duplicating and building up parts, shapes and objects; being familiar with the properties of various metals;
- Operating numerous types of power and hand tools including saws, grinders, shears and breaks;
- Performing general mechanical maintenance, construction and other related work, when not welding, as assigned
In addition to the Primary Duties listed above, the employee may be called upon to perform other work as circumstances require.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES :
Responsible for metal fabrication and welding of rolling stock equipment and components in accordance with AWS , FRA and Amtrak standards and guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Conducts shielded metal arc or gas metal arc welding processes with low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum
- Performs maintenance in accordance with AWS and 49CFR regulations and Amtrak standards
- Fabricates fitting of weldments or pieces to be welded with metal machinery such as shear, brake, roll, ironworker, drill press, radiac saw, band saw, used for cutting, bending, drilling, shaping, rolling and punching
- Performs various welding operations and thermal cutting to include : SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, oxy / acetylene cutting, plasma arc cutting and carbon arc gouging
- Welds with 4’ X 8’ plate ranging from one-eighth to unlimited thickness
- Welds with stock to include I-beam, channel, square tubing, angle iron, flat bar, round stock of various sizes. Uses electric and pneumatic grinders, drills and small tools
- Performs truck and bolster repair, side frames, gear pans, cut levers, coupler repair, draft gear wear plates
- Uses overhead cranes for lifting of metal plates and structural steel
- Reads blueprints and drawings and works from design and layout of templates and fixtures
- Maintains proper care and use of materials, test equipment, machines and hand tools normally associated with assigned job
MININMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
- High School Diploma or GED
- Experience in heavy welding and metal fabrication
- Must Successfully complete training and attain / retain certification applicable to assigned job
- Knowledge of crane operations, power tool usage, machine operations (shear brake, ironworker and radial saws), hydraulic equipment operation, and electric, air and battery-operated drills
- Knowledge and skills in the use of electrical tools, equipment and the measurements necessary to meet established standards
- Skill in thermal cutting oxy / acetylene, plasma, carbon arg, tig, stick, mig welding, chain & sling rigging equipment
- Ability in metal identification, test equipment operation, blue print analysis, and equipment assembly
- Ability to read, write, and communicate proficiently
- Some computer skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & Work Environment :
- Completion of technical school or apprenticeship program
- Experience in the maintenance of railroad equipment
- American Welding Society (AWS) certification

I. POSITION DESCRIPTION :
Provides operations and production support by performing general equipment repair.
II. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Fabricates special items, as required.
