Description

  • Performs a wide variety of plant and facilities maintenance, including ancillary machine equipment repair functions, machine installation, machine movement.
  • Primarily focused on activities supporting the production operations of the company.
  • May be deployed to new construction or new installation if production requirements permit.
  • Dismantles, moves, installs, levels and rearranges machine tools and mechanical equipment. Constructs, installs, dismantles, aligns and repairs general plant equipment such as overhead tracks and hoists, conveyors, etc.
  • Welds a variety of metals, such as cast iron, tool steel, bronze, high carbon and chrome alloy steel, aluminum, sheet metals, brass, etc.
  • Makes adjustment of welding and auxiliary equipment to obtain desired welding characteristics, and performs a variety of duties incidental to, or in conjunction with maintenance welding.
  • Lays out, fabricates, assembles by soldering, brazing, welding, bolting, etc., and repairs ferrous and non-ferrous sheet metal plant equipment such as guards, hoods, air ducts, stacks, hoppers, etc.
  • Operates all types of power sheet metal machines, such as rolls, brakes, punches, presses, drills, spot welders, etc.
  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment associated with the trade including, but not limited to, forklift trucks, material handling equipment, crawlers, hoists, overhead and mobile cranes, block and tackle, rollers, pinch bars, welding and cutting equipment, measuring and leveling equipment and hand tools.
  • Works from blueprints, sketches, written and oral instructions.
  • Must have completed a formal apprenticeship OR have 8 years of equivalent training to qualify as a Journeyman.
  • Must be able to qualify and pass the company truck driver physical examination.
  • Must be able to read, and work from mechanical and architectural blueprints and have knowledge of sheet metal layout and basic math.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of rigging, erecting and fitting of machines and equipment.
  • Must have an extensive knowledge of welding on a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, be familiar with the properties and reactions of these metals during welding and have a knowledge of methods to control warpage and relieve stresses.
  • Must be able to perform heavy lifting.
  • May work from ladders or catwalks high above the floor.
  • Must exercise extreme care to avoid bodily injury to self and others in the lifting and moving of heavy equipment.
  • Must work both inside and outside of building in all kinds of weather.
  • Requires a considerable amount of walking and ladder climbing.
  • Frequently works near rapidly moving machinery.
  • Normal welding conditions involve heat, glare, fumes, etc.
  • Employee required to wear protective clothing and equipment associated with the specific task or assignment.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES :

Responsible for metal fabrication and welding of rolling stock equipment and components in accordance with AWS , FRA and Amtrak standards and guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Conducts shielded metal arc or gas metal arc welding processes with low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum
  • Performs maintenance in accordance with AWS and 49CFR regulations and Amtrak standards
  • Fabricates fitting of weldments or pieces to be welded with metal machinery such as shear, brake, roll, ironworker, drill press, radiac saw, band saw, used for cutting, bending, drilling, shaping, rolling and punching
  • Performs various welding operations and thermal cutting to include : SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, oxy / acetylene cutting, plasma arc cutting and carbon arc gouging
  • Welds with 4’ X 8’ plate ranging from one-eighth to unlimited thickness
  • Welds with stock to include I-beam, channel, square tubing, angle iron, flat bar, round stock of various sizes. Uses electric and pneumatic grinders, drills and small tools
  • Performs truck and bolster repair, side frames, gear pans, cut levers, coupler repair, draft gear wear plates
  • Uses overhead cranes for lifting of metal plates and structural steel
  • Reads blueprints and drawings and works from design and layout of templates and fixtures
  • Maintains proper care and use of materials, test equipment, machines and hand tools normally associated with assigned job

MININMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in heavy welding and metal fabrication
  • Must Successfully complete training and attain / retain certification applicable to assigned job
  • Knowledge of crane operations, power tool usage, machine operations (shear brake, ironworker and radial saws), hydraulic equipment operation, and electric, air and battery-operated drills
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of electrical tools, equipment and the measurements necessary to meet established standards
  • Skill in thermal cutting oxy / acetylene, plasma, carbon arg, tig, stick, mig welding, chain & sling rigging equipment
  • Ability in metal identification, test equipment operation, blue print analysis, and equipment assembly
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate proficiently
  • Some computer skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & Work Environment :

  • Completion of technical school or apprenticeship program
  • Experience in the maintenance of railroad equipment
  • American Welding Society (AWS) certification

II. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
