Position Summary
Mobile Intrack Welder is responsible for driving, operating, diagnosing, and maintaining a mobile electric flash-butt welding machine.
Work includes driving a welding truck (CDL required) to and from work locations and setting the welding truck on the track.
Primary / Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Will perform Intrack Welding functions.
- Capable of performing job duties in a safe and professional manner.
- Self-directed individual with the ability to supervise and lead a small group.
- Responsible to report customer and production status in a professional and timely manner.

- Must have the ability to read precision instruments and gauges with a background in heavy mechanical / electrical machines and equipment.
- Perform QA inspections as required.
- Candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Candidate will set up and perform weld operations including moving jack stands into place prior to making welds, cleaning and removing ballast rocks in the work area, vehicle maintenance, and cleaning, truck movement while on track from work site to work site, grinding welds as needed.

- Layout locations and make own setups as required. -Weld Company products by certified processes maintaining critical alignment tolerances and improvising tooling and holding fixtures as required.
- Manually fusion weld various metals for fabrication of tooling, and maintenance, repair and assembly of plant machinery, equipment and buildings.

Summary : Ability to weld product parts and assemblies, normally in areas of easy access on flat or horizontal surfaces, in accordance with customer specifications and requirements, using gas, and inert gas arc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to :
- Ability to determine the correct welding rod to use, flux to apply, and tooling appropriate method to use and relationship of parts.
- Must be certified in at least two of the following alloy groups in accordance with MIL T and Quality Control Procedure #9, Groups I, II, III, IV, and VI.
Departmental job requirements may require more than two certifications.
- Perform certified seam flange, edge, fillet and lap-fusion welding on various types of materials which are the same or nearly the same thickness at point of weld.
- Weld fittings on tubing, ducts, tanks and other similar units.
- Weld tanks, vessels, tubing, brackets, boxes, shelves and other assemblies which are subjected to high stress or pressures.
- Be familiar with shop practice and assembly procedures to determine whether parts are fitted properly and meet specifications prior to welding.
- Have fair knowledge of weld symbols and weld specs.
- Performs rework, repair and other associated operations relating to the work described herein when such requirements are characteristic of the classification.

ANNUAL SALARY

The salary for the Harbor Department is $98,950 (flat-rated)
The salary range in the Department of Water and Power is $116,948 to $122,649. The salary range covers multiple pay grades within the class.

- A Welder performs skilled heating, welding, plasma cutting, and brazing, using arc, flux core, MIG, and TIG welding on a variety of modern metals in a shop, in a generating station, or in the field, using oxyacetylene and electric welding equipment;
- layout and fabrication work, using manual and power shears, hydraulic punch presses, notchers, benders, drill presses, disc sanders, bench and box breaks, rollers, and a variety of hand tools;
reads blueprints, and maintains equipment, performing minor mechanical repairs.
NOTE :
A Welder may weld at various heights, including working on scaffolding, in excavations, boats, barges, container cranes, on fuel tanks, confined spaces, and in other hazardous locations;

REQUIREMENT(S) / MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)
1. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a welder; or
2. Four years of full-time paid experience in the following welding processes : shielded metal arc, tungsten inert gas, gas metal arc, and oxyacetylene cutting.
Completion of a welding program at an accredited institution may be substituted for each year of experience lacking up to a maximum of two years at a rate of 15 units in welding to one year of experience specified in Requirement #2.
PROCESS NOTES
- A license as a certified Welder for Structural Steel issued by the Los Angeles City Department of Building and Safety is required for all positions in the General Services Department, for most other positions in the City, and in the Department of Water and Power prior to appointment.
- Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.
- Applicants filing under Requirement #1 must submit an Apprenticeship Certificate at the time of filing. The copy of the Certificate must be attached to the online application BEFORE the application is submitted.
If the Certificate is attached AFTER the online application has been submitted, it will not be available to the City and applicants WILL NOT be credited with having submitted it.
Applicants who fail to submit the Apprenticeship Certificate at the time of filing by attaching it to the online application and will not be considered further in this examination.

- In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, an Environmental Protection Agency approved Technician Certificate may be required for some positions prior to appointment.
- Prior to appointment to some positions, Welders will be required to pass the tests for Operator Qualification in accordance with Section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
Employees in these positions must maintain their welding Operator Performance Qualifications throughout the course of employment.

- processes of welding, cutting, brazing, hard-facing, and skilled heating; types and uses of joints and filler metals for ferrous and nonferrous metals;
- fabrication and uses of templates and drawings; standard welding symbols approved by the American Welding Society; the air arc gouging process;
oxy-acetylene processes; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

The multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test from a remote location (, their home) using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection.
Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line.
Candidates who do not complete and submit the remote proctored multiple-choice test on-line using a computer by the specified date and time will not be considered further in this examination.
