Job Summary
Truck Driver is responsible for the operation of commercial vehicles in excess of 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight, to deliver goods to customers and operations, and to pick up material from vendors and other operations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely drives on the road delivering products in various weather conditions
- Completes pre-trip and post-trip inspection sheets
- Inspects equipment to ensure safe operating conditions checks oil and fuel prior to leaving the yard
- Secures load and / or inspects load to ensure has been properly secured
- Performs duties consistent with all applicable safety, DOT and Company rules
- Conducts preventive maintenance to truck and ensures truck is clean
- Maintains appropriate driving records, logs, and shipping documents as required
- Maintains radio / telephone and EOB Electronic On-Board System contact with base or supervisor to receive instructions or to be dispatched to new locations
- Verifies shipping documents for accuracy, and obtains customer’s signature on paperwork upon delivery
- Completes paperwork as required
- May operate a forklift to load / unload trailers as required
- Follows forklift rules and policies as described by Company policy
- Completes training as required by management
- Participates in safety, CI and other programs and meetings
- Performs other duties as required
- Physically able to Tarp Loads
- Able to stay out over night at least 3 days a week
- Home weekends
Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age
- Minimum 12th grade basic education completed
- Minimum 1 year of experience driving a commercial vehicle in excess of 26,000 lbs. Preferable 3 to 5 years of experience driving a commercial vehicle
- Working knowledge of vehicle parts, and how to handle minor repairs to ensure equipment is in proper operating conditions
- Required to have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
- Successful completion of forklift driver licensing process

TRUCK DRIVER TRAINEE
Description
A teammate in this position learns the essential functions of the Driver job including the accurate and timely distribution of products to various customer locations.
The Driver Trainee gains exposure to warehouse and other operational functions as part of the developmental process of becoming a McLane Driver.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
A teammate in this job will train side-by-side with a Driver Trainer to acquire the skills necessary to perform the following functions :
- Maneuver tractor into position to attach trailer and handle lines to secure.
- Operates truck in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies.
- Inspect tractor-trailer equipment for defects pre / post trip and submit DOT inspection report indicating condition.
- Operates Driver Delivery Handheld (DDH), document delivery receipts / product temperatures and exceptions. Inspects trailer to ensure product is secure for undamaged transport of product.
- Rides and trains with Driver Trainer of tractor-trailer to various destinations, gaining knowledge of commercial driving regulations and observing the Driver’s skill in starting engine properly, approaching intersections, making turns, backing, parking, and maneuvering vehicle on the road and on customer premises.
- Maintain driver log (Manual or PeopleNet) according to DOT regulations, documenting delivery receipt, product temperatures and exceptions.
- Assists the Driver in unloading trailer and delivering product into customer premises.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
A teammate in this position must :
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Meet eligibility requirements in the McLane Transfer and Promotion Policy.
- Complete training and receive Class A CDL in 6 months or less.
- Ability and willingness to select / load / unload and / or deliver ALL products that may be ordered by McLane customers.
- Stand, walk, sit, climb, reach, bend, squat, and stoop to accomplish the essential job functions.
- Read and comprehend labels, instructions, and bills of lading.
- Perform mathematical calculations to verify quantities of product.
- Communicate with customers, management, and other teammates.
- Safely drive a tractor-trailer, use a 2-wheeled dolly, ramp, and on board PeopleNet devices.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
- The environment encompasses all areas of a distribution center, transportation department, shop and customer facilities.
- Working conditions could contain moderate noise, vibration of vehicle and extreme weather conditions depending on climate.
- Regular and frequent travel, including overnight.

The Opportunity :
Moves trailers in Shipping and Receiving yards. Drives product to and from other locations as needed.
What Your Impact Will Be :
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Move loaded and empty trailers to and from receiving dock doors. Spots empty trailers to shipping dock doors for outbound loads.
- Move product to and from other locations as needed.
- Use computer system to update trailer movement and status in yard.
- Maintain daily logs and documentation.
- Examine and maintain equipment on a daily basis.
- Maintain a safe driving record and minimal property damage.
- Ensure the accurate and safe movement of equipment in the yard. Safely maneuver trailers into and out of tight spaces.
- Complete tasks accurately and within the allotted time.
- Ensure trailers are properly and securely in position for unloading. This includes cutting seals, opening trailer doors, and applying chalks, physically verifies trailers are empty prior to removing from dock door, change trailers status from full to empty.
- Climb in and out of tractor trailer
- Hook and unhook trailers from tractor trailer
- Other tasks as assigned.

What We’re Looking For :
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Possess or able to acquire a class A commercial driver’s license
- Possess or able to acquire and maintain a fork lift certification
- Complete and pass required training
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Able to read, write, and communicate in English
- Abel to read serial numbers, sku’s, and numbers and letters on seals. Able to match numbers and letters on seals to paperwork and vice versa.
- Able to understand and follow written and oral direction
- Able to perform basic math skills such as add, subtract, multiply, and divide
- Able to make sound decisions and judgments concerning vehicle operation and safety
- Able to work independently and at a fast pace
