Job Objective :

Drives truck to pick up and transport materials from and to specified destinations by performing the following duties.

Essential Functions :

1. Plans daily routing based on pick-ups assigned.

2. Ensure that all calls are made as scheduled and that care is taken to ensure the security and safe handling of goods and materials.

3. Instructs and supervises helper, keeping in mind that helper is in a rehabilitation program and good personal and work habits are taught by example as well as instruction.

4. Responsible for developing assigned routes, including bagging on both sides and across the street of each pick-up.

5. Responsible for the safety and security of the truck and equipment (including securing of hand truck at end of the day).

Daily inspections of air, water, oil, etc. to maintain equipment in good operating equipment.

6. Responsible to promptly report to immediate supervisor all accidents involving a truck, personal injury, or property damage.

7. Act as personal representative of The Salvation Army and ensure that all customers are treated courteously. Immediately report any problem in pick-ups to the immediate supervisor through the dispatcher.

8. Responsible for the behavior of truck helpers.

9. Wear provided back guard when doing any substantial lifting or moving.

10. Personally maintain a neat appearance, including clean clothing, clean-shaven, neatly trimmed hair, shirttail tucked in, and appropriate headgear.

11. Responsible for loading and unloading of the truck and helping with other trucks as requested.

12. Support the mission statement of The Salvation Army.

13. Other duties as assigned by supervisor or administrator.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Supervises beneficiaries assigned as part of work therapy.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Clerical / Mathematics Skills

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, distance, and American money.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Drivers license to operate trucks of the type used by location. Clear MVR report. Successfully completed The Salvation Army Road Test.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a non-expired, Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of application. Applicants cannot have an Air Brake ("L") restriction on their Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any other restrictions limiting operation of equipment.

Applicants must pass a driving test demonstrating their ability to operate various vehicles, which may include vehicles up to 7-speed manual transmission.

NOTE : As a condition of continued employment, you must obtain an "X" endorsement on your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) by March 15, 2024.

Candidates who do not possess an "X" endorsement on their CDL by March 15, 2024 will be terminated and removed from the pool.

An X endorsement is a combined endorsement of both tankers and hazmat. Candidates who obtain an X endorsement by the deadline will remain in the pool until a new assignment becomes available, provided there are no disciplinary or attendance issues.

PREFERENCE :

Applicants who possess both an X endorsement and a P endorsement or a commercial learner's permit (CLP) with the X and P endorsement will be given first consideration to be hired by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA).
