The Scientist IV will work onsite in the Atlanta, Georgia location for Global R&D team with a focus on the North America Operating Unit of The Coca-Cola Company.

This Food Scientist role will conduct product development in the Hydration Category. This position requires the ability to design and execute new products from concept through to commercialization using knowledge of food science, sensory guidance, analytical, microbiology and engineering principles. In addition to new products, this role will support base business maintenance and productivity projects as appropriate.

The role will work independently and utilize internal/external relationships to deliver product innovation. Act as a consultant by responding to targeted requests from field or other departments for the specifications, processes, and formula systems for the Hydration business.

What You’ll Do for Us 

• Design, develop, conduct and/or review experiments (e.g., laboratory or process experiments) to deliver new products; evaluate ingredient, product or packaging safety, efficacy, or claims; or evaluate new ingredients, materials, products, or processes.

• Record data from analyses or experiments in a computer, logbook, or laboratory notebook. 

• Write detailed & accurate reports for analyses, experiments, or projects (e.g., equipment validation, evaluation of new processes).   Communicate clearly in email and verbally with technical, non-technical, domestic, and international audiences.  

• Prepare samples and sampling plan for ingredients, intermediate or finished products, or other materials to perform analyses (e.g., chemical, physical, sensory, microbiological).

• Gather and organize information under tight timelines to support senior management's decision-making. 

• Apply knowledge of sensory and consumer testing techniques and principles to influence consumer test design and collaborate intelligently with sensory team.

• Identify, select, authorize and/or manage relationships with vendors or suppliers to ensure proper capabilities, conformance with Company standards and appropriate products and services (e.g., ingredients, materials, testing services). 

• Protect information provided in confidence from outside sources (bottlers and other business partners) and ensure this information is not disseminated to those not directly involved.

• Develop quality standards, specifications, or requirements (e.g., concentrate/beverage base, ingredients, packaging, beverage, processes, and new technology) to ensure quality and integrity of products, and to protect the trademarks of the Coca-Cola Company. 

• Provide support to customers to identify, manage or resolve incidents (e.g., critical emergencies, product withdrawals/recalls, disasters, potential business threats) in order to maintain the integrity of our products and trademarks and to minimize interruptions to Company or customer operations.

• Conduct review of scientific or other literature to maintain and improve laboratory knowledge/skills.

• Use and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation (e.g., troubleshooting, conducting preventative maintenance, calibrating, and repairing).   

Qualification & Requirements 

• Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry or related field is required, Master’s or PHD degree is preferred 

• 3+ years successful experience in product development in the beverage industry.

• Product Development: Deep knowledge and practical application of the product development process. Flexible and creative development skills with a strong attention to detail.

• Project Management: Knowledge of project management principles and the ability to apply the principles, tools and techniques to develop/plan, manage or execute projects or work plans to ensure successful completion (e.g., on time, within budget).  

• Building Technical Relationships: Ability to apply technical knowledge and establish credibility with highly technical audiences in order to build technical relationships that will benefit customers or the Company. 

• Ingredients: Knowledge of and experience with key ingredients used in production of concentrates and beverage bases (e.g., caramel, citric acid, sodium benzoate, phosphoric acid, natural flavors).

• Beverage Manufacturing: Knowledge of and ability to apply carbonated and non-carbonated beverage processing techniques (e.g., proportioning, carbonating, syrup manufacturing, filling).

• Flavor Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of flavoring materials, the flavor industry and the trade organizations that represent them.

• Computer Skills: Knowledge of Microsoft suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), formula/database type systems, and capable user.  

• Basic Organic Chemistry: Knowledge of basic organic structures, reactions, functional groups, and properties needed to understand the reactions of organic compounds in Company products. This includes the understanding of moderately complex principles to problem-solve package or ingredient related issues.  

• Endurance: Willingness and ability to occasionally function effectively over extended periods of time.  Ability to be flexible and adjust priorities based on business needs.

• Laboratory Practices: Knowledge and application of Good Laboratory Practices (e.g., handling of chemicals and glassware, preparation of standards and reagents, proper measuring techniques, data management, housekeeping).

As a support member of the Coca-Cola Company Freestyle Innovation Center, Capabilities & PMO team, the Program Manager will lead and manage all aspects of a project that may be part of a larger program, which may or may not be global. Project Management may include creating the needed processes, operating models, designs and technology to enable effective and efficient implementation of the program. The Program Manager will leverage best-in-class systems and processes for collaborative planning and execution. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of successfully integrating and driving a broad array of strategies and action programs to significantly improve collaborative planning, productivity/cost, service and quality. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of successfully delivering projects and programs on schedule and on budget with features agreed to by the end customers. Key Responsibilities:

• Leverage project management tools and processes to lead and manage projects; Administering a stage-gate process including but not limited to: Project Charter; Project Plans; Project Sponsors; Status routines; Change and Decision Logs; Reporting, Risk Management and Communications

• Prepares and maintains project plans including Scope, Quality, Risk, Communication, Procurement, Resources, Integration, and Time Management plans.

• Tracks activities against a milestone-based plan and provides regular and accurate status reports and schedule updates

• Lead the planning and execution of the strategy to design and deliver the Program within required cost, quality, requirements and specifications. Ensure all required stakeholders are included in the strategy. 

• Compile all relevant existing data to communicate the strategy.  Design and implement data gathering (rather than formal research) programs to close information gaps.

• Manage cross functional teams across Freestyle and, including several of the following external partners: research & innovation, supply chain, service, marketing, communications, legal, finance, customer teams and bottlers as required.

• Steward Project with Sponsors and Stakeholders. Identify and partner with other Freestyle Project and Program Managers to integrate and balance work streams to maximize use of resources.

• Steward development of capabilities for commercialization/ implementation of project.

• Manage and steward TCCC relationships with key business partners if necessary (Internal Suppliers, 3rd Party Supply Partners and other Partners as needed by the program).

• Prepare and maintain project plans including Scope, Quality, Risk, Communication, Procurement, Staffing, Integration, and Time management plans. Track activities against a milestone-based plan and provides regular and accurate status reports and schedule updates.

• Develop and share best practices for leadership of complex innovation programs within the system

Education:

• Bachelor of Science Degree (focus on engineering, process engineering or computer science).

• PMP certification desirable.

Related Work Experience:

• 7+ years’ experience as a project manager. 

• 3+ years’ experience with embedded design (hardware, software and mechanical systems).

• 5+ years’ experience in the practice of requirements engineering according to a product development life cycle in a team environment.

• Consumer electronics or consumer appliances experience is strongly preferred.

• Prepares and conducts independent, compliance and systems-based audits of our bottling operations to verify conformance to the health and safety, and environmental sustainability requirements.  Conducting rigorous reviews of key environmental, occupational health and safety performance indicators for information that enhances the assessment of business risk to improve the overall audit process. Leverages investigative skills and techniques to quickly identify risk situations and areas of non-conformance.
• Facilitates the development and reporting of organizational metrics that lead to enhanced audit organization/system performance. Interacts and communicates regularly with bottler and company senior management in the reporting of business risks

• Continuously seeks insights and knowledge on industry trends and technology that will further improve the organizations value proposition and performance.  Utilizes subject matter expertise to participate in the review, development and enhancement of company standards, policies, and procedures
• Leverages business relationships and influence leadership and operations to support, communicate and drive the execution of current and future program for regulatory compliance as well as provide technical expertise
• Works in collaboration with R&D in order to reduce time to market, improve productivity and flexibility, reduce complexity, logistics cost reduction, re-apply ideas & leverage intellectual property across the System, minimize write-offs, optimize product and packaging and increase equipment utilization.
• Works closely with R&D ensuring supply and manufacturing effectiveness is considered from prototype selection phase.

Qualification & Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Life/Health Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field is required, Master’s degree is preferred
• At least 5 years of experience in Quality Assurance or similar technical field including at least 3 years working with manufacturing operations is a must with knowledge and application of concentrate and beverage base manufacturing processes

• Knowledge of data in the Formula Management System, including reasonable value ranges and calculations origin, and the ability to recognize inconsistencies is needed
• Knowledge of process operating conditions and requirements leading to the safe manufacture of products (OSHA) as needed, this includes the implementation of and assessment of performance to these requirements in areas such as loss time injury rates, lock out, tag out, hearing conservation, fall protection, work at heights, safe operation of forklifts and trucks, and confined space entry management
• Knowledge of project management principles and the ability to apply these principles, tools, and techniques to develop/plan, manage or execute projects or work plans to ensure successful completion is needed
• Experience with implementation and oversight of environmental and safety management systems such as ISO14000/18000 is needed
• A proven track record of driving improvement in Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) performance indicators is highly preferred
• National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certification and Green Belt Six Sigma are preferred
