About the Department

UChicago Student Wellness provides coordinated and comprehensive medical care, counseling, psychiatry, and health promotion services for students at the University of Chicago.

Our talented and diverse staff work collaboratively to deliver high-quality, inclusive care with the highest standards of professionalism and student confidentiality.

Our medical, counseling, psychiatry, and health promotion services are co-located in the University’s beautiful, state-of-the-art Student Wellness Center, which opened in Autumn 2020 and enables our team of interdisciplinary providers to closely collaborate and provide integrated care and wellness programing.

Our mental health services include, but are not limited to, diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and / or group therapy;

medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. To support the health and wellbeing needs of our diverse student body, we offer support spaces, including support spaces for students of color, international students, and LGBTQ+ students, and wellness programming, including workshops on imposter issues, adjusting to college, managing stress, and diversity in the classroom.

The UChicago Student Wellness mental health staff include clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, advanced practice psychiatric nurses, clinical social workers, and administrators dedicated to providing culturally-informed mental health services.

In early 2020, UChicago Student Wellness hired its first associate director for diversity, inclusion, and outreach who is developing comprehensive strategies to enhance and support the mental health and wellbeing of underrepresented students on campus.

Our staff also regularly engage in diversity and inclusion training to deepen their awareness and cultural competence to better inform the care they provide.

Staff and leadership are deeply committed to issues of diversity, equity, an inclusion on campus and in the services we provide.

UChicago Student Wellness staff collaborate with offices and groups across campus, such as the University’s Center for Identity + Inclusion, Office of Spiritual Life, Office of International Affairs, and Center for College Student Success, as well as Recognized Student Organizations, including cultural and ethnic and religious and spiritual groups.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be a licensed clinical social worker with established clinical, outreach, and training experience.

This individual will also provide mental health programs and services to UChicago students.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for supporting the mental health needs of university students, a dedication to continuously deepening their own cultural awareness, and commitment to work on helping to create a diverse and inclusive campus environment.

This is a full-time, 12-month salaried position.

Responsibilities

  • Focuses on meeting the needs of University student populations through providing individual and group psychotherapy and offering outreach and workshops to enhance access and meet the diverse needs of the student body.
  • Conducts clinical diagnostic evaluation and assessment of students, including urgent-care / crisis evaluations.
  • Provides goal-focused, evidence-based, time-limited individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.
  • Provides emergency and crisis intervention services, including scheduled daytime on-call coverage; maintains timely and complete electronic documentation.
  • Exercises discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations.
  • Reviews, analyzes, interprets, and / or adheres to federal and state laws, rules, regulations, Code of Ethics, policies, and procedures as related to clinical social workers.
  • Provides consultation, training, and outreach to members of the University of Chicago student community both during and after hours.
  • Participates in clinical and administrative staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Provides clinical supervision of trainees as needed and as appropriate.
  • Analyzes effectiveness of counseling or treatments and the accuracy and completeness of diagnoses, modifying plans or diagnoses as necessary.
  • Interprets, monitors, and records client progress according to measurable goals described in treatment and care plan.
  • Plans own resources to combat social problems, prevent substance abuse, or improve community health and counseling services.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education :

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience :

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

MSW from an accredited institution.

Experience :

  • Advanced training or experience with college-age or young adult populations.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, campus departments, and student groups.
  • Background with the development, implementation, and assessment of mental health programs for university students.

Certifications :

Licensed or license eligible as a Clinical Social Worker in Illinois.

Review facility policies and procedures as part of the facility's interdisciplinary team to assure compliance with state and federal regulations

Participate in reviewing and setting policies concerning resident care and quality of life

Participate in developing facility social work policies

Participate in quality assurance interdisciplinary team meetings

Understand and meet all government requirements for social service documentation

Document progress in meeting the psychosocial needs of residents

Work with the interdisciplinary team and administration to promote and protect resident rights and the psychological wellbeing of each resident.

Prevent and address resident abuse as mandated by law and professional licensure

Work with residents, families, significant others, and staff to provide support, information, and organization for taking a more proactive role in self-advocacy to improve quality of life / care for individual residents and those who live and work within the nursing home and the community at large

Complete a social history and psychosocial assessment for each resident that identifies social, emotional, and psychological needs

Participate in the development of a written, interdisciplinary plan of care for each resident that identifies the psychosocial needs / issues of the resident, the goals to be accomplished for those needs / issues, and the appropriate social worker interventions

Ensure or provide therapeutic interventions to assist residents in coping with their transition and adjustment to a long-term care facility, including their social, emotional, and psychological needs

Ensure or provide support and education to residents’ / family members / significant others to assist in their understanding of placement and facility issues in addition to referring them to appropriate social service agencies when the facility does not provide the needed services

Provide groups for residents’ / family members / significant others as appropriate to their needs

Provide clinical interventions to address catastrophic events that occur during the resident's stay in the facility

Coordinate the resident discharge planning process and make referrals for appropriate home care services before the resident's return to the community
