Hourly - Laboratory Technician I, II
SUMMARY :
- Under the general supervision of a Supervising Scientist, the incumbent conducts and participates in a variety of routine chemical, biological, and microbiological analyses on aqueous and solid samples from sanitary landfills, industrial waste, wastewater treatment facilities, including plant influent and effluent, bodies of water receiving effluents and other sources to determine the effectiveness of treatment and conformance to State of California and State of Arizona requirements;
- prepares media, standard solutions and reagents; inspects, adjusts, cleans, maintains and operates laboratory equipment, materials and work area;
- assists with special research projects; inputs data into computers; keeps laboratory records and prepares laboratory reports;
collects samples from treatment facilities, rivers, shorelines, and ground waters; and performs related duties as required.
The LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I is the entry level training class in the series. Incumbents follow standardized procedures or detailed instructions to perform a limited range of laboratory tests.
The LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II is the experienced working level class in the series. Incumbents perform a broad range of both standardized and non-standardized tests and analyses.
This class differs from the Laboratory Technician I class by the greater technical knowledge required to conduct the more complex sampling, analyses and the greater independence of action exercised.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A valid California Class C driver license; - AND - for LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I : Any amount of education or experience that provides the knowledge and abilities listed;
- AND - for LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II : Twelve units of college chemistry plus two years of laboratory experience conducting chemical or biological analysis of sewage or water treatment samples.
A bachelor's degree in Chemistry may substitute for one year of experience.
EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
- The competitive selection process may cover a knowledge of : The principles of chemistry, biology, microbiology, and related sciences;
- the principles and methods of chemical, biological, and microbiological testing and analyses; chemicals and materials used in laboratory analyses and their properties;
standard laboratory techniques, basic algebra, laboratory practices pertaining to safety; and equipment use, trouble-shooting, care and maintenance.
- The ability to : Conduct chemical, biological, and microbiological laboratory tests of solid and liquid samples using standardized methods;
- understand and carry out technical instructions, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, accurately take and record measurements including weights and temperatures, use of laboratory equipment and materials;
maintain records and prepare reports, drive to various Districts facilities as well as sampling sites.

SELECTION PROCESS :

RETIREMENT
- CALPERS : The Districts belong to the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), and all monthly status new hires will be enrolled in CalPERS.
- Most new hires will be enrolled in the defined benefit formula of 2% @ 62 in accordance with the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) and are required to contribute to the plan (7% for the 22 / 23 fiscal year;
Effective July 1, the required contribution will be 7.75%). Those who qualify based on current or previous public service may be enrolled in the defined benefit formula in place on December 31, , which was 2% @ 55 and are considered classic members.
For classic members, the Districts pay the employee share. Please contact the Human Resources Department for more information regarding contribution rates.
Although Districts employees are exempt from Social Security, employees are required by federal law to contribute a percentage of their salary for Medicare coverage.
COMPENSATION
Full-time Hourly Employees may be granted a 5.5% salary step increase after working 1, hours with a performance evaluation rating of "meets expectations" or higher.
Additional step increases may be granted if the employee is rated as "meets expectations" or higher after each additional 2, hours of work until they reach the equivalent of the top step of the salary range for their classification.
Hourly Employees may apply for a promotional monthly status job in a different classification after 12 months of service, and may be converted in-place to monthly status on the first of the month following 18 months of full-time Districts service.
HEALTH INSURANCE
MEDICAL : Employees enrolled in CalPERS may sign up for their choice of medical plan. As of January 1, , the Districts contribute up to $.
21 per month for coverage of the employee only. Each employee has the option of purchasing additional medical insurance coverage for family members, through payroll deductions.
OTHER : For other types of insurance coverage such as life, dental or long-term disability, employees may want to consider obtaining their own policies until such benefits are provided after conversion to monthly employment status.
LEAVE TIME
VACATION : Employees accrue vacation hours based on the time worked in a calendar year. Vacation hours earned in one year may be used on or after January 1 of the next year.
This is the only paid time off provided to Hourly Employees and it may be used to cover absences for reasons such as illness or holidays not worked.
SICK LEAVE : 24 hours provided upon hire.

Sanitation Associate (evening)
PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Sanitation Associate is responsible for controling all environmental and in-depth equipment cleaning to ensure the safety and quality of our food products.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES / OUTCOMES
- Disassembles and sets up all production equipment, cleans all equipment using COP and CIP systems, verifies the proper cleaning and set-up of all equipment, puts away production and sanitation materials, drives material handling equipment, monitors / tests chemical concentration of all CIP systems.
- Maintains CIP Chart Recorders. Documents necessary information on charts and CIP logs.
- Takes inventory of sanitation supplies. Uses bioluminescence technology to verify CIP systems.
- Responsible for performing tasks according to the plant Master Cleaning Schedule.
- Responsible for basic troubleshooting of all Sanitation equipment.
- Trains new Associates on required skill sets for Environmental Operations.
- Maintains work area in a safe and orderly fashion according to GMP and Safety guidelines.
- Operates Rich’s SCADA system and completes appropriate paperwork.
- Performs any other related miscellaneous duties assigned by Lead person.
- Will be required to train in other areas of the plant as required by the Skillblock program, which may include : Valve and Pump PM program.
