The position functions as a Physician Assistant (PA) in the outpatient and inpatient setting within the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System with a responsibility for performing procedures in the area of Otolaryngology (ENT) Section.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant AND Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) AND Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations : In addition to the basic requirements stated above, the following qualification criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates : Physician Assistant-I (PA-I)Experience and Education.
None beyond the basic requirements. This is the entry level for PAs. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities(KSAs).
i. Ability to utilize the principles of PA practice in the care of assigned patients to provide appropriate care. ii. Ability to perform patient history and physical.
iii. Ability to formulate a plan and provide treatment to the patient. iv. Ability to provide patient care that is abreast of changing concepts and advancements in the profession.
Physician Assistant-II (PA-II)Experience and Education. The PA at this grade is at the intermediate grade level and has had progressively increasing responsibility and experiences as indicated in the KSAs listed below.
Individuals will have demonstrated the ability to analyze and solve more complex medical problems than at the entry level grade and can utilize their training in the successful practice of patient care and participate in team problem solving.
Individuals demonstrate the KSAs of PA-II intermediate level by : i. Two years of successful practice as a PA. OR, ii. Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, , or another accrediting agency.
OR, iii. A doctoral degree in a health-related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the , Skills, and Abilities (KSAs).
i. Skills to analyze and solve complex medical problems. ii. Ability to function autonomously and make independent medical decisions.
iii. Skill to incorporate training and experience into the successful practice of patient care including telehealth medical care.

Physician Assistant-III (PA-III)Experience and Education. PAs at the PA-III grade are at the full performance level and lead and organize patient care independently, practice within multi-disciplinary teams, and coordinate all aspects of patient care across the health care system.
They utilize advanced clinical knowledge and judgment in decision-making and evaluating outcomes. They function as experts in clinical practice and / or in areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities, may serve as mentors for transitioning PAs, and may provide training for health care students.
Individuals can demonstrate the KSAs for the full performance level by : i. Three years of successful practice as a PA. OR, ii.
Successful completion of a PA post-graduate residency program sponsored by VHA Office of Academic Affiliations or other postgraduate residency programs accredited by VA, ARC-PA, , or another accrediting agency and one year of professional practice as a PA.

iii. Ability to present clinical findings and recommendations to appropriate management officials. iv. Ability to clinically facilitate the delivery of patient care in collaboration with health professionals, health managers, and other health care personnel.
v. Ability to implement and initiate clinical changes to established treatment protocols based upon new medical literature research findings to enhance patient delivery care for improved patient outcomes.
vi. Ability to participate clinically in the development of the PA patient care audit processes involving in-depth review and analysis of medical records.

The following duties and tasks of the Physician Assistant include but are not limited to the following : - Performs initial histories and physical examinations - Provides ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for assigned patients as well as episodic patients - Screens and triage outpatients to determine further needs of care - Assistants ENT Surgeons in the operating room for surgical procedures and care - Prescribes medications within defined scope of practice (including schedule 11-V controlled substances).
Writes orders and prescriptions as necessary for the care of the patient in accordance with Federal and State law - Orders diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, and x-rays - Carries out health promotion and disease prevention activities - Orders, consult notes, procedure notes, progress notes, consultation requests and administrative letters which are written by the Physician Assistant will be clearly identified as such in the written and electronic medical records - Initiates and expedites requests for consultation and scheduling of special tests and studies - Makes interim summaries on progress notes of the patient's medical record - Provides education and counseling to patients and families for preventative care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatment and drugs - Administration of topical anesthesia - Performs various procedures to include but not limited to head and neck biopsies, nasal endoscopy, flexible laryngoscopy, removal of foreign bodies, excision of skin lesions / nodules, use o local infiltration of anesthesia, wound debridement, cerumen removal, control of epistaxis, etc.

Responsibilities
Job Summary :
The Neurosurgery Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA) will function as a member of the Surgery Team
and act under the supervision of an approved supervising physician. The incumbent will provide care
and guidance to patients, take history and perform physical examinations. This position assists during
procedures within the scope of practice : in closing major and minor incisions, records post-op orders
and follow-up progress notes as required, and assists in the transport and care of patients from the
operating room to the recovery room or intensive care unit. Duties include : visiting patients daily to
evaluate, observe and answer questions; give patients post-operative discharge instructions; and assist
in discharge planning. The incumbent administers physician's prescriptions and treatments for patients,
and performs prescribed therapeutic procedures. The incumbent participates in collection and
abstraction of data for registry reports, as requested, and provides input on performance improvement
strategies. Call responsibilities are required for this position.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications :
- Five to Nine years experience in the surgical setting
- Master's Degree
- Graduate from a program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
- Additional education may be required for some specialty areas.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Surgical First Assist Certification required
- CT PA - Physician Assistant - Current licensure to practice as a physician assistant issued by the Nevada Board of Medicine
