Job Summary
The Medical Assistant is responsible for the following :
Controls and monitors patient flow to maximize efficient use of providers and exam rooms. Responds to variations in patient volume, provider ability, and resources (e.
g., early arrivals, no shows, providers who are absent, etc.) by making continual adjustments in room utilization and assignment.
Maintains communication with patients, families, and providers regarding delays and schedule interruptions.
Prepares exam room for each patient in accordance with needs of patient’s visit. Escorts patient to exam room and prepares patient for provider visit.
Checks to ensure patient comfort, privacy, and safety.
Prepares medical record for patient visit, confirming accuracy with patient identifiers, entering chief complaint and social history.
Interviews the patient to obtain data. Records patient’s stated level of pain and performs other screening tools to include fall risk, abuse, neglect, tobacco usage, etc.
- Performs and records vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight).
- Performs routine tests that may include, but are not limited to : electrocardiogram, vision and hearing screening, and collection of specimens for lab testing.
- May perform phlebotomy. Prepares specimens for transports as needed.
- Where appropriate, and as governed by clinic protocols, performs collection of specimens and / or perform nasopharyngeal swabbing for COVID-19 testing under the authority and supervision of a licensed health care provider or licensed health care professional.
- Reviews list of medications with patient. Notifies provider of patient requests for referrals and prescription renewals
- Performs Point of Care Testing (POC) as ordered, including Urine dips, HCG testing, Strep A, HGB A1C, and glucose testing.
Performs daily / monthly quality assurance for POC as outlined in hospital policy and procedures.
- Ensures the necessary supplies and equipment are ready for the provider’s use during the visit Assists. Chaperones providers / nursing staff with physical exams, treatments, and procedures as necessary.
- Prepares exam room for each patient in accordance with needs of patient’s visit. Escorts patient to exam room and prepares patient for provider visit.
Checks to ensure patient comfort, privacy, and safety.
- Participates in prescription management tasks, including prior authorization.
- Under the direction of provider, clinical leadership, administrative leaders orders supplies. Monitors supply inventory for clinic and orders supplies as needed.
Stocks, maintains, and rotates supplies in clinic rooms daily according to clinic demands. Monitors expiration dates.
- Maintains medical equipment.
- At the direction of a provider, participates in telephone screening and follow-up communications with patients and / or families.
- Participates in unit-specific quality improvement projects, i.e., hand washing audits, time-outs, refrigerator / medication logs, daily / monthly code cart checks.
- Active participant in unit meetings.
The Medical Assistant must have the following :
- CPR and Basic Life Support Certification
- NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agency) recognized Medical Certification required OR certification needs to be completed within one year of hire date.
- High School Diploma / GED, or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required
Any of the following are acceptable :
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists
- National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing

POSITION FUNCTION : Perform a wide variety of medical assisting activities during patient visits in an outpatient setting.
Position involves extensive interaction with diverse populations including patients, medical staff practitioners and other personnel.
Reports to the Director or their designee with competency assessment input from assigned physicians and physician extenders.
Performs a wide variety of patient care activities during patient visits and / or procedures. May include, but not limited to;
taking / recording vital signs, height and weight, EKGs, phlebotomy, suture removal and assisting during procedures.
Opens and closes assigned exam rooms / corridors daily. Ensure that equipment and supplies necessary to carry out patient care activities are available and usable and the environment is clean, organized, and stocked appropriately.
Monitor patients entering, waiting or leaving the exam area. Facilitates timely flow referring issues to the designated patient flow coordinator.
Assist patients who have physical and psychological limitations with ambulation and patient care functions to ensure their comfort and dignity during the exam.
May include transferring a patient from a wheelchair to exam table, undressing and dressing patients and ensuring patient is safe until provider arrives.
Communicates with and assists patients, other employees and the general public in a courteous, helpful manner by phone and in person in compliance with the center’s G.R.E.A.T. service standards.
Takes complete, accurate information from patients, prioritizing and communicating to clinical staff appropriately. Distribute questionnaires and forms to patient at the beginning of visit.
Enter orders and information relating to the patient visit in the electronic medical record as assigned.
Escort patients to ancillary service areas such as radiology and lab as needed. Perform other support activities as requested by managers or clinical providers in order to provide for patient needs in an optimal way.
Registers patients, verifying demographics and insurance, in required EMRs as assigned to provide front desk coverage.
Collect patient record upon completion of visit. Schedules next Center appointment in related EMRs. May schedule related diagnostic and / or lab tests making every reasonable effort to accommodate patient and provider needs.
Obtains required insurance prior authorization for testing.
Track, order, and maintain supplies and equipment which may include monitoring code cart supplies. Ensure that supplies are within expiration dates.
Clean and disinfect medical equipment used for patient care between each patient use according to guidelines as required by the center.
Maintains patient confidentiality at all times, by phone, in discussion or by electronic distribution of information.
Attends internal or external educational or training sessions as assigned. May be assigned off-shifts, holidays, and weekends, and may work additional hours beyond schedule when needed to provide for patient services or in an emergency / disaster.
Employee maintains competencies (position specific and hospital-wide) required for the specific patient population served.
Perform all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules, and regulations as set forth by appropriate regulatory and governmental agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.
May be required to perform similar or related duties reflective of the level of experience as may be necessary on an emergency, temporary or limited basis or as designated by the Director of the Center or their designee.
Min Education :
High school diploma or GED required. Completion of program as Certified Medical Assistant preferred. Associates degree preferred
Min Experience :
Minimum 2 years related work experience required and in an orthopedic outpatient setting preferred.
License / Certification : Current CPR certification
Skills :
Basic familiarity with computers. Navigate at a basic level within web-based applications. Decision Making : Ability to make decisions based on specific instructions, standard practices and established procedures which generally require little or no supervision.
Oral / written Communication : Ability to read and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors;
communicate effectively in basic English with patients, families and medical center staff in response to routine questions.
Team Work : Ability to interact respectfully with other employees, professional staff and / or external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information or deliver services.
Customer Service : Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active.
BID Milton is offering a $1,000 signing bonus (in two payments over 6 months) to hired candidates for this position. Candidates will receive 500 on the pay period following date of hire and 500 once they reach six months of employment.
Important Details :
- Employees applying internally from within BID Milton or another BILH entity are not eligible for this signing bonus program.
- Re-hires may receive signing bonuses if they terminated their employment with BID Milton more than a year before new hire date.
