  • Cleans assigned areas by washing furnishings, floors, and equipment with special cleaning solutions and disinfectants to prevent the spread of disease, uses dust cloths and vacuum cleaner to dust window sills, blinds, floors, and furniture, empties ashtrays and trash buckets and arranges furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion, makes beds with clean linen in prescribed manner, scours and polishes sinks, tubs, mirrors and similar equipment, replenishing supplies of soap, towels and other dispensable items.
  • Although the employee may work without close supervision, work is continually subject to review from supervisors and the general public.
  • This position does not provide direct patient care.

Identify Environmental Requirements. Analyze a wide array of environmental requirements including permits, plans and regulatory requirements and determine applicability to our operations.

Develop and maintain a compliance framework that communicates plant responsibilities for each compliance program.

Conduct Inspections and Audits. Conduct frequent inspections and audits at each plant location to assess regulatory and environmental management compliance, control significant environmental risks, and ensure the adequacy of environmental management systems.

Utilize findings to identify opportunities for improvement.

Develop and Deliver Training. Develop material to engage and educate operations on environmental awareness topics and required tasks.

Provide training on an individual and group basis.

Interact with Various Groups. Provide assistance to local plant and sales personnel on environmental issues and compliance on a day-to-day and project basis.

Interact with governmental agencies regarding new legislation, regulations and compliance issues. Participate in trade association activities.

Manage the use of consultants to improve return and minimize costs.

Complete Compliance Support Activities. Prepare and submit permit applications, modifications and renewals. Prepare and maintain plans (SPCC, SWPPP, fugitive dust, etc).

Track and complete reporting requirements (discharges, storm water, emissions, TRI, etc.) and manage recordkeeping requirements.

Qualifications

Skills You’ll Need :

Education. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, or a similar technical area is preferred. An Environmental Engineering degree and / or an advanced degree in some aspect of environmental studies is desirable.

Experience. Previous experience in the environmental area is preferred. Must have a high level of hands-on experience in reviewing regulatory requirements and assessing their applicability and impact to the field.

Regulatory Knowledge. Must have expertise in environmental regulatory compliance and numeric groundwater and surface water modeling.

Must have strong knowledge of the federal and state environmental regulatory process and experience with environmental regulatory areas (RCRA, CWA, CAA, TSCA, etc.)

Interpersonal Skills. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and interact well with all levels of personnel.

Technology Skills. Must have the ability to use computerized equipment and technology. Must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google, Oracle Business Environment, and other software packages relevant to the position.

About the Position : Description

Description

The Port is seeking an Assistant Environmental Specialist to support natural resources management programs. This is an entry level position in the Environmental Conservation Department and the Assistant Environmental Specialist will be responsible for assisting with a variety of environmental initiatives in San Diego Bay including project planning and implementation, monitoring efforts, permit compliance, environmental outreach efforts and project management support.

  • Assistant Environmental Specialist will assist with field surveys and environmental monitoring; applying for grants to support endangered and invasive species management programs and wetland restoration projects;
  • preparing permit applications, reviewing permit applications, and ensuring permit compliance with Army Corps of Engineers and Regional Water Quality Control Board permits;
  • coordination with and assisting other Port departments in implementing the Chula Vista Natural Resources Management Plan for the development and restoration of the Chula Vista Bayfront;
  • implementation of the Port and Navy’s Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan; assisting with obtaining entitlements for a saltmarsh mitigation bank;
  • assistance with meeting preparation and materials for public environmental advisory committees; assistance with managing consultant agreements and tasks;

Assistant Environmental Specialist should be familiar with applicable environmental laws and regulations and have a background in marine or coastal watershed science and / or environmental policy;

GENERAL PURPOSE

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Assistant Environmental Specialist is the entry-level professional class in the Environmental Specialist class series. Initially under direct supervision, incumbents perform the more routine assignments associated with this class series, such as sampling or survey activities.

With experience and an incumbent's enhanced knowledge of legal, regulatory and policy provisions, the work becomes progressively more diversified and difficult and requires increasing independence.

Incumbents may be assigned program or project responsibilities in any one or more of the Port's environmental protection program areas, including natural resources management, storm water management, watershed management, site assessment and remediation, bay water and sediment quality, climate planning, energy management, sustainability, air quality and public engagement and information.

Assistant Environmental Specialist is distinguished from Associate Environmental Specialist in that the latter class is the full working-level professional class in the Environmental Specialist class series, and incumbents in the latter class typically carry out specialized and moderately complex assignments and are independently responsible for assigned programs or program components, requiring independent judgment, initiative and decision-making.
