Responsibilities
Responsible for providing safe, courteous transportation service and serve as support staff for the Engage Life Director or Maintenance Director.
Coordinates vehicle pre-maintenance, maintenance, and repair to ensure vehicle longevity.
- Drive vehicle from community to social and other various destinations according to assigned schedule.
- Assist residents into and out of vehicle in a safe manner.
- Secure passengers’ wheelchairs to restraining devices to stabilize wheelchairs during trip.
- Practice safe driving techniques at all times.
- Clean and service vehicle with fuel, lubricants, and accessories and report and coordinate vehicle maintenance repairs.
- Establish and monitor daily and weekly trip inspection and preventative maintenance programs, as well as maintain records regarding the maintenance of all vehicles.
- Deliver groceries and other belongings to resident’s apartments.
- Assist the Engage Life Department in activities and programs as needed.
- Ensure charges are submitted to the business office daily for community travel expenses.
- Maintain a safe driving record according to Company guidelines.
- Handle emergency situations and basic First Aid.
- May perform other duties as needed and / or assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one (1) to three (3) months of related experience and / or training;
or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five (5) or more years of driving experience and knowledge of vehicle preventative maintenance programs.
- Commercial driver’s license required to operate commercial size vehicles.
- Able to operate a seven (7) to sixteen (16) passenger bus, unless otherwise required by Atria or state law. Able to operate a limousine or car, tire changing equipment, First Aid Kit, wheelchair lift, and dollies / hand trucks.
- Experienced with vehicle emergency repairs, able to change automobile tires and handle minor on-road maintenance.
- Knowledgeable of all streets within an 8-mile radius of the community.
- Position requires driving responsibilities (may use Company provided vehicle and / or personal vehicle).
- Must satisfactorily meet and be in compliance with Atria’s Motor Vehicle Record Policy standards.

What we require :

Van Driver
Responsibilities : *Drives and escorts shelter clients to and from appointments. *Ensures welcoming and respectful atmosphere on the van.
- Assist riders as needed when entering or exiting the vehicle. *Delivers belongings to other sites as needed. *Operates vehicle in a safe, timely and efficient manner.
- Reports problems related to routing, scheduling or vehicle breakdowns and malfunctions in a timely manner. *Assist in scheduling and routing of vehicle.
- Performs daily routine safety checks and pre-trip inspections on assigned vehicle. *Maintains cleanliness of vehicle both inside and out by routine wiping down and mopping as well as bringing van to car wash on a routine basis.
- Maintains vehicle in good working condition by ensuring routine maintenance is performed. *Maintains knowledge of local area street and highway systems, motor vehicle laws and regulations, safe / defensive driving techniques and the needs of population served.
- Reports all traffic incidents and accidents immediately to Shelter Director or their designee. *Reports concerns about client stability to the Director of Social Service or their designee in a timely fashion.
Qualification : Valid New York State Driver's License - with a clean driving record is a must. *High school diploma or GED.

POSITION SUMMARY :
Responsible for the immediate supervision of all passengers, in the absence of another staff person, while transporting clients from their point of departure to their final destination.
POSITION DUTIES :
- Responsible for providing safe, comfortable and punctual transportation to all passengers.
- Speak to consumers, program personnel, parents and caregivers in a professional manner that is sensitive and respectful to consumer’s disabilities.
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking the vehicle.
- Secure all passengers in vehicles using seat belts and / or wheelchair securing equipment.
- Properly operate any equipment used in or during transport, such as hydraulic lifts, ramps, tie downs, seat belts, safety flares, fire extinguishers, 2- way radios, beepers, etc.
- Responsible for handling all special and emergency requests in addition to regularly assigned runs, including non-consumer related transportation.
- Responsible for pre trip and post trip inspection of all assigned vehicles. Properly maintain vehicle while in your possession.
- Attend staff meetings as required.
- Responsible for the submission of all required documentation.
- Assist escort, and / or intervene independently in situations where consumer behaviors create a hazardous or unhealthy situation to themselves, and or other passengers.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS :
- Compliance with Article 19A of NYSDMV Traffic and Safety Laws.
- Carry a company I.D. card and Valid NYS Driver’s License at all times while on duty.
- New York State C.D.L. Class B License with a passenger and air brake endorsement, or C.D.L. Class C with passenger endorsement.
- Minimum 3 years experience driving and at least 21 years of age.
- Acceptable drivers abstract, containing no more than a combination of 2 moving violations or accidents within the last three years.
- Must possess basic map reading skills and working knowledge of 5 boroughs of NYC.
- Be aware of and comply with State and local Rules and Regulations governing commercial drivers.
- Be aware of a safety and evacuation plan for all equipment used.
