The Medical Assistant 1 performs basic administrative / clerical / operational / customer support / computational tasks.

Typically works on routine and patterned assignments.

Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant 1 performs clinical duties such as discussing symptoms and gathering and inputting information into the electronic medical records system, taking vital signs, giving injections, performing diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms at an outpatient care site.

Collaborates closely with Physicians and Nurses. Delivers direct patient care dependent on what active certification allows.

Decisions are limited to defined parameters around work expectations, quality standards, priorities and timing, and works under close supervision and / or within established policies / practices and guidelines with minimal opportunity for deviation.

Required Qualifications

  • Less than 2 years of Medical Assistant experience in 'back-office' direct patient care
  • Applicable State licensure in field of study (RMA / CMA)
  • Current CPR certification
  • Less than 2 years of leadership experience
  • This role is considered patient facing and is part of Humana / Senior Bridge's Tuberculosis (TB) screening program. If selected for this role, you will be required to be screened for TB.
  • Must be a team player with excellent communication skills
  • Experience in a fast pace / high volume environment
  • Experience with MS Outlook
  • Basic Computer knowledge
  • Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on continuously improving consumer experiences

JOB PURPOSE :

Responsible for providing a variety of patient care activities under the supervision of a physician, advanced practice provider (APP), or registered nurse in accordance with established guidelines and standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Meets and greets patients, obtains appropriate patient information and medical history, accurately completes and documents patient medical and physical histories and other related items in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

2. Records vital signs; performs EKG, spirometry and or other similar office procedures; aids licensed staff during treatment, examination, and or testing of patients, which may include injections and immunizations.

Advises physician and or nurse of patient's adverse reaction to medication and / or treatment to medication and / or treatment.

3. Performs lab duties, including but not limited to : phlebotomy, order entry, specimen collection, establishes chain of custody if applicable, and labels for delivery to appropriate authority for testing.

4. Under the supervision of a licensed personnel, distributes educational information and instructions for patient care, diagnostics, and other appropriate treatments.

5. Coordinates telephone and in-basket requests to refill prescription drug medications and report test results in accordance with provider instructions;

responds accordingly to other requests under a physician or other licensed provider's guidance.

6. Prepares and maintains examination / treatment rooms, including inventory of supplies and equipment.

7. Practices Standard Precautions, including handwashing and disposal of bio-hazardous materials; complies with established risk management, HIPAA, and safety procedures.

8. Attends required meetings, in-services, and participates in committees as required.

9. Assist with administrative duties as needed, to include procedure scheduling and completion of medical and physical history forms and other related information requested by third party payors.

10. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES); or similarly recognized accrediting organization or completion of a Nursing Assistant program is required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED :

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS :

Serves as liaison between patient and physician. Provides staff coverage for other clinical personnel. Completes applications for Handicap parking permits, FMLA, Disability forms, and Work excuses.

Schedules all OR cases and maintain surgery schedule. Responsible for all patient phone calls, insuring proper documentation in Athena of action taken / advice given.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MEDICAL ASSISTANT

In the role of a Medical Assistant, you provide care for patients at the direction of the doctor or provider by giving them specific office medical treatments.

It is essential that you follow patient charts and take patient vitals as well as blood and skin samples. You will also assist the doctor in medical procedures, dress wounds, maintain nursing supplies and triage, and sterilize equipment.
