Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Creative Marketing Specialist is responsible for assisting the Director of Marketing and Fan Experience with developing and implementing athletics marketing and engagement activities for the University of Hawai i at Manoa Athletics Department (UHMAD).
  • This position will be a part of the Athletics Marketing Office and collaborate with UHMAD external teams to generate excitement and focus efforts to enhance the fan and game day experience.
  • Assist in developing and executing an annual plan for brand building and messaging, both locally and nationally, through various creative avenues.
  • Design creative content for Hawai i Athletics video boards (Football, Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Volleyball, Baseball, and Softball).
  • Handle the day-to-day marketing operations of an assigned sport including but not limited to marketing and advertising plans, promotional schedules, budget management, script writing, game production including the use of video boards, and community outreach.
  • Manage all LED digital messaging on video screens in the Stan Sheriff Center during home sports events using Daktronics and other related equipment.
  • Coordinate and supervise game management personnel, including part-time temporary staff, student assistants, interns, and volunteers.
  • Partner with UHMAD Media Relations and Digital Media Departments to align communication and marketing strategies, cross-promote departmental priorities in outgoing communications, and maximize content / promotion for fundraising at all home athletics competitions.
  • Collaborate with the Ticket Office to create marketing materials for a variety of initiatives that involve fundraising (i.

e. annual brochure / guide, posters, and other miscellaneous projects)

  • Design creative graphics for athletic events and initiatives using Adobe Creative Suites.
  • Design creative content for sponsors as assigned by the multi-media rights firm.
  • Facilitate the creation of video projects on an annual basis for all teams across Hawai i Athletics.
  • Utilize social media to share program and student-athlete success stories.
  • Responsible to attend scheduled UHMAD related events to promote UH Athletics which may require flexible work availability during nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Responsible for transporting crew and other equipment / supplies on / off campus for marketing events.
  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with staff, administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the Corporate Partner Program, and other individuals interested in the Athletics Department.
  • Know, recognize, and comply with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the NCAA and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.
  • Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if you have reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees or students, have occurred or will occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in communications, telecommunications, broadcasting, marketing, graphic arts / digital media, sport management, or related field and 2 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for sports communication or sports marketing;

or equivalent education / training or experience.

  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in marketing, graphic design and video production demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and systems associated with marketing, graphic design and video production.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes, and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the area of marketing, graphic design and video production.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays during athletic-related scheduled events.
  • Ability to work effectively and independently under pressure, with frequent interruptions, and remain flexible in handling several concurrent projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to create and utilize social media content, posting, forwarding, graphics, and other social media functionality.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and sound analyses of a variety of administrative support, program management, or related issues.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with a high level of tact, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated ability to pay attention to details.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate desktop publishing software.
  • Ability to represent the University, its student-athletes and coaches with the highest of character.
  • Possession of valid Driver's License, Class 3.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and / or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of NCAA Division I rules and regulations relating to media and public relations and marketing.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience working in intercollegiate athletics.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate Daktronics software.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity, understanding and working effectively in multicultural societies, similar to Hawaii, contributing to an inclusive environment.
