Position Summary

This position, under the direct supervision of the Nursing Manager, will be called upon to perform administrative and clerical duties in support of student health center operations as well as a variety of standard medical assistance tasks.

While working to assist medical providers, the employee is under the supervision of a licensed professional.

Medical Assistants perform a variety of medical technical support services within their scope of practice, as defined by the Medical Board of California.

Medical Assistants may perform only those duties authorized by their supervising physician / nurse practitioner who, in compliance with applicable state regulations, must be present in the facility when the Medical Assistant is performing specific procedures.

Work assignments may involve other related activities and may be focused in one or more clinical departments within a student health center and may include any of the duties outlined for Clinical Assistants.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position scheduled to end on or before June 30, 2024 with the possibility of reappointment.

This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday Friday, 8 : 00 a.

This appointment is for an 11 / 12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with July as the anticipated off month.

While Medical Assistants are not certified, registered, or licensed in the State of California, the Medical Board of California requires that medical assistants complete specific types and hours of training to perform the duties outlined in their scope of practice.

This training must be documented and a physician or other qualified teacher, as identified by the Medical Board of California, must certify in writing that the Medical Assistant has completed the training successfully.

CSU-specific requirements are as follows :

Most common, incumbents are required to possess a certificate of completion from an accredited and approved medical assisting program through the Department of Education or Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education within the Department of Consumer Affairs.

In this case, the supervising CSU physician must verify competencies.

At the discretion of the student health center director, an in-house campus-training program may be developed according to the guidelines established by the Medical Board of California.

In this case, a CSU physician must document and certify in writing that the formal training and clinical practice hours required by the Medical Board of California to perform the duties of a Medical Assistant have been completed successfully.

NOTE : If a Medical Assistant is performing phlebotomy outside the regular scope of practice, appropriate phlebotomy certification may be required by the State of California.

Under the general supervision of the Cal Coast Student Financial Center Director (CCSFC) and the Financial Aid Federal Work-Study Coordinator, the Administrative Coordinator is responsible for providing administrative support for on-boarding new student workers, for scheduling training, scheduling shifts at the CCSFC and allocation tracking for all of the Federal Work Study (FWS) and student assistant employees working for the center.

This subdivision focuses on delivering student-centered engagement in an environment that is transparent, highly regulated and compliance driven under the leadership of an Associate Vice President.

The CCSFC’s focus is to provide centralized, individual financial case management and counseling to students, parents, and families.

The CCSFC maximizes the efficiency and effectiveness of the Financial Aid Office, the Scholarship Office, and Student Account Services (SAS) by providing a scalable, one stop shop approach to providing assistance with issues related to financial aid, scholarships, and student billing regardless of where the students and staff physically are located.

The CCSFC will provide student and families with information related to the following areas :

  • Financial Aid Application Assistance
  • Financial Aid Resources- types of financial aid available Scholarship Application Processes
  • Scholarship Resources- types of scholarships available SDSU Educational Costs- tuition, fee, and housing costs Student Financial Aid Disbursements
  • Student Billing Information

  • Financial Literacy Counseling in partnership with Cal Coast Credit Union

The staffing model is a blend of permanent represented staff, graduate students, and undergraduate peer counselors led by a Director (MPPI) and a designated training coordinator (SSP III) with direct reporting lines to Student Affairs & Campus Diversity Assistant Vice President.

The center will provide customer service by serving as a single point of contact to analyze and resolve questions about financial aid, scholarships, financial transactions, academic progress, and transactional-based issues.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures.

Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing.

Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.

These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical / vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

The Student Financial Resources sub-division, within the Division of Student Affairs & Campus Diversity houses 4 separate student service offices- the Cal Coast Student Financial Center (CCSFC), the Financial Aid Office, the Scholarship Office, and Basic Needs / ECRT.

This subdivision focuses on delivering student-centered engagement in an environment that is transparent, highly regulated and compliance driven under the leadership of an Associate Vice President.

The CCSFC’s focus is to provide centralized, individual financial case management and counseling to students, parents, and families.

The CCSFC maximizes the efficiency and effectiveness of the Financial Aid Office, the Scholarship Office, and Student Account Services (SAS) by providing a scalable, one stop shop approach to providing assistance with issues related to financial aid, scholarships, and student billing regardless of where the students and staff physically are located.

The CCSFC will provide student and families with information related to the following areas :

  • Financial Aid Application Assistance
  • Financial Aid Resources- types of financial aid available Scholarship Application Processes
  • Scholarship Resources- types of scholarships available SDSU Educational Costs- tuition, fee, and housing costs Student Financial Aid Disbursements
  • Student Billing Information
  • Student Fee Waiver information and processes
  • Financial Literacy Counseling in partnership with Cal Coast Credit Union

The staffing model is a blend of permanent represented staff, graduate students, and undergraduate peer counselors led by a Director (MPPI) and a designated training coordinator (SSP III) with direct reporting lines to Student Affairs & Campus Diversity Assistant Vice President.

The center will provide customer service by serving as a single point of contact to analyze and resolve questions about financial aid, scholarships, financial transactions, academic progress, and transactional-based issues.

Education and Experience

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures.

Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing.

Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.

These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical / vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

Position Summary

Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (StratComm) is seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Senior Media Relations Officer.

We are seeking a skilled professional with expertise in media relations and both internal and external communications, and one who comes with a positive attitude and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, flexibility, integrity, and a compassion-driven leadership style.

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Media Relations and in teamwork with other members of the Strategic Communication and Public Affairs department, the Senior Media Relations Officer provides assistance in carrying out the initiatives and activities of the department.

  • Scope of work includes but is not limited to identifying and facilitating media pitching opportunities, media monitoring and reporting;
  • researching, writing and editing material for SDSU’s internal channels and for external earned media (i.e. media advisories);

facilitating multi-media projects through the utilization of photography and videography.

The position supports communication needs for StratComm and partners on campus. This position, in reporting to the Senior Director of Media Relations, will perform a variety of tasks which include :

Serve as the first point of contact for reporters searching for faculty / staff experts and other basic information on the campus;

manage daily media inquiries.

Cultivate, enhance and maintain relationships with key reporter contacts locally and nationally; build knowledge of targeted media outlets and media markets;

identify opportunities for external, proactive media pitching, presentations and other public affairs activities that promote awareness and elevate the university’s subject-matter experts.

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President and Chief Communications Officer and the Senior Director of Media Relations, serve a key role in crisis communications and emergency management.

As StratComm is the semi-centralized communications hub for university marketing, communications and community affairs, develop short- and long-term communications plans on a diverse range of university projects and initiatives through collaborative work with different departments and / or divisions;

also, provide consultation through coaching and media preparation.

Prepare daily summaries and assessments of local, national and international media coverage, and prepare coverage reports.

Research, interview, write and edit articles and produce multimedia content for SDSU NewsCenter, the SDSU Magazine, newsletters, fact sheets and develop messaging and scripts.

Maintain the university’s Expert Directory website and regularly review for updates and necessary changes.

As a representative of StratComm, attend meetings and events, and also serve as a member of university committees, as assigned.

As needed, periodically perform work and attend events outside standard business hours.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, permanent / probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Department Summary

StratComm serves as the official voice of San Diego State University and shares the President’s vision, values and priorities while articulating a unified message about the university’s unique story.

Core service areas include crisis and issues management, marketing, news and media relations, social media, web and interactive communications, executive communications and visual communications, and government and community relations.

We work together and with our partners across the institution and auxiliaries to promote the transformational diversity and impact of SDSU programs and achievements.

StratComm develops and oversees content for SDSU’s main web pages and also for SDSU NewsCenter, flagship social media channels, video productions, photography and the SDSU Magazine.

The department also manages presidential communication; projects related to issues management and crisis communications;

internal communication to faculty, students and staff; and external communications to the greater campus community, media representatives and the general public.

Another important arm of StratComm is government and community relations, an area responsible for building and maintaining relationships with constituent groups.

The area also has responsibility for advising SDSU faculty and administrators on projects, initiatives and strategies designed to support collaborative engagement and dialogue with agencies and community members.

StratComm is also responsible for protecting and managing the SDSU brand through web and brand style guidelines along with graphic design services.

StratComm leads the planning, coordination, and implementation of integrated marketing and communication strategies that support the mission of SDSU.

Education and Experience

Knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and / or media relations, and / or some exposure to marketing and marketing research.

This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience.

In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Key Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of related experience

Experience in a higher education environment working in marketing, communications or public affairs is preferred

Established media contacts - including national media

Familiarity with the news media and the shifting media environment in the San Diego region, statewide and nationally

Familiarity with SDSU and its locations

Experience producing camera photography and video for use on the Internet

Experience writing for the web, social media and magazine features
