Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

Responsible for completion and submission of electronic patient care record for each dispatched flight within specified

time frame

Responsible for daily aircraft checks, which includes narcotic count

Provide pre-hospital and intra-hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished

to the accepting medical facility maintaining thorough patient care documentation

Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical

experiences

Maintain documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, safety, and advanced procedures

Knowledgeable in use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by emergency programs (ground

and air).

Maintains positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, EMS representatives, hospitals, and the public

Functions as a medical flight member

Attends pre-mission briefings and mission debriefing and completes necessary documentation

Assists in pre-mission liftoff checklist and Pilot assistance when needed, i.e. radio, navigational, and visual observation

activities

Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment prior to liftoff

Conducts aircraft safety briefings as needed

Responsible for filling open or vacant shifts within assigned area as deemed appropriate by the Program Director

Other Duties :

Participates regularly in activities, projects, and committees

Attends and participates in meetings according to established guidelines

Undertakes and maintains projects as assigned

Acts as a mentor and / or participates in orientation of new employees

Participates in continuing education programs

Maintains awareness of current issues related to pre-hospital care through participation in professional activities, i.e.

national, state legislative-elected or appointed

Will instruct classes as directed by Program Director

Will assist with PR and marketing at established bases where needed within the assigned area

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience :

Minimum of three (3) years’ progressive experience in an

emergency or critical care setting required.

Flight experience preferred

Education :

Current RN licensure in the states served by the assigned area

required (Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi)

EMT Certification in state(s) where required

BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP, required.

Advanced Certification (CFRN), required.

Examples of Work Performed :

  • Receive, prioritize, and often handle multiple, simultaneous emergency and administrative phone calls for assistance, such as but not limited to, car accidents, medical emergencies and hospital transfers.
  • Process requests for emergency and non-emergency ambulance service, that often require referring to or memorizing detailed reference materials and standard operating procedures, including databases, maps, telephone listings, and other resources.
  • Identify, through appropriate and timely questioning of the caller, the nature of the problem.
  • Summarize the critical information for public safety first responders in the computer aided dispatch system using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and refer and classify calls for assistance according to the level of response required, as outlined in the policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Access and operate computer data bases and search websites as necessary.
  • Provide administrative support to the corporate office, such as referring callers to the patient accounts department and administrative offices.

Receive and transmit information effectively by radio and telephone.

Receive requests by radio, phone, electronic format or fax from law enforcement, fire / medical personnel, and other public safety agencies to, access, enter, retrieve and disseminate information;

prioritize and effectively relay information in proper format to requesting agency. Contact outside public service agencies as requested and relay information as required.

Work Environment :

Incumbents function in a stressful environment and work eight and twelve hour shifts during nights, weekends and holidays.

Decisions must be made quickly with little margin of error and consequences are usually seen immediately. Work involves operation of multiple computer terminals, requiring doing several things at once, without getting confused or forgetting an important piece of information.

Constant attention to the workstation and its communications equipment limits mobility, except for work breaks. Telecommunicators must conduct themselves with a high degree of professionalism despite frequent contact with individuals who are distraught, angry and sometimes disrespectful.

The content and nature of many calls is traumatic and disturbing. Work is carried out in a secured 9-1-1 emergency call center in a controlled, closely supervised, and highly structured work environment.

Daily contact with the public to respond to questions and requests for assistance; with field personnel to provide information;

with other public safety agencies to exchange information and requests.

Duties impact on the Communication Center's ability to deal with both emergency and non-emergency situations in a timely and effective manner :

  • Proper performance of duties results in the dispatch of the appropriate response unit for each situation; increased safety and efficiency of paramedics and other emergency responders due to being provided timely and accurate information;
  • and the accurate maintenance of records and files. Improper performance of duties can result in a negative public image for the agency due to inefficiency in handling calls or poor public relations skills;

decreased safety to emergency responders and the public due to the provision of inaccurate information, delays in response or in appropriate dispatch of response units.

Consequences of errors range from a simple delay in service to loss of life.

Full Job Description

The Communication Specialist is one of the first points of contact for discharge planners, physicians, facilities, and other Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies.

This position is primarily responsible for emergency flight operations for Pafford’s air medical teams. This includes call intake for inter-facility flights, dispatching the flight team, flight following, and coordinating helicopter operations with landing zone coordinators and security / police officers at sending and receiving facilities.

When not actively working through flight requests, the Communication Specialist is responsible for taking non-emergency ground ambulance transport requests.

High school graduate or GED Education / training

PREFERRED : Certified Flight Communicator Course Additional position requirements :

Rotational hours (Weekend, Day, Evening, Night, Holiday)

Hours may vary, and shift holdovers may be necessary to assist the team when call volume is high.

Salary : $38,896-$50,336 based on a 48-hour weak one week and a 36-hour week the next.

Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.
