As assigned : 8 : 00 am - 5 : 00 pm or 7 : 30 am 4 : 30 pm

General Description The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for implementing all medical activities associated with the health component.

This person must work well with children, staff, and personnel of other agencies. Responsible for all health-related tasks as assigned by the Birth-to-Five Head Start Health Coordinator.

Essential Duties Assists with the implementation and monitoring, on an ongoing basis, of the goals and activities of the health component’s performance standards.

Provide support, technical assistance to the center managers and staff in the design and implementation of the health services component.

Ensures that all pertinent information required and parental consent forms are signed and on file prior to providing any child with health or dental services.

Collects available materials and resources for use in the health component. Assists the with completing vision / hearing screenings Responsible for maintaining current health records for all Head Start children as mandated by the Head Start Performance Standards.

Monitors the classroom supply levels and informs, as needed, the Birth-to-Five Head Start Health Coordinator. Assists in identifying children with special health needs.

Maintains stock of supplies. Takes records of vital signs and assesses condition of children. Prepares equipment. Answers parent’s phone calls.

Assists in conducting parent meetings associated with health-related topics. Complies with all policies and procedures as established by the American Association of Medical Assistants.

Responsible for contacting parents about health screenings and examinations. Responsible for all record keeping tasks required by the health component on a monthly basis in preparation for the Program Information Report (PIR).

Performs other duties as assigned by Birth-to-Five Head Start Health Coordinator, Birth-to-Five Head Start Director or Associate Director.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience :

  • Must have current Certified Medical Assistant certification.
  • High School diploma or GED, and
  • Three (3) months experience in providing medical related services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Demonstrates ability to read and write, follows written and oral instructions, and files alphabetically and numerically.
  • Proficiency in the operation of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Accepts responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of assigned activities.
  • Uses creativity, self-expression, or imagination with the children.
  • Makes judgments or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria relies on one or more of the five physical senses.
  • Capable of making evaluations based on measurable or verifiable data.
  • Deals with people beyond giving / receiving instructions is courteous, cooperative, conscientious, and tactful to fellow employees, parents, and children.
  • Performs repetitive tasks according to set procedures with precision and thoroughness.
  • Performs under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations.
  • Performs variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Special Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain the following examinations, and certifications :
  • First Aid certification; will need to be renewed every two (2) years by expiration date
  • CPR Infant / Toddler certification; will need to be renewed every two (2) years by expiration date
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, physical and functional capacity evaluation prior to first day of employment
  • Must successfully pass and submit a pre-employment TB test and periodically as indicated by the regional Texas Department of State Health Services or local health authority.
  • Requires a valid Texas Driver's License and liability insurance. Driving record is subject to review and approval by agency insurance carrier.
  • Proof of work eligibility must be provided.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends to attend or conduct parent meetings.
  • Must be able to attend out of town training conferences.
  • Requires a hearing and vision screening certification by the Texas Dept. of Health.

Physical Demands of Essential Duties

  • Normal physical activity includes occasional sitting, frequent standing, and walking in a usual workday.
  • Requires occasional pulling out and pushing in of drawers and other objects with occasional bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, kneeling, twisting of the body, and reaching above shoulder level.
  • Requires occasional lifting and carrying of heavy objects such as boxes of supplies, equipment and children.
  • Requires use of the five senses (hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, and tasting) to perform various job duties and in dealing with staff, clients, and outside.
  • Requires employee to use hands, arms, feet, legs, neck and head while performing Agency tasks.
  • Requires frequent data entry into computer terminal.
  • Requires frequent speaking and listening abilities with staff, co-workers, parents, supervisor and parents / volunteers must be able to hear a child cry out when in pain, injured, or ill.
