The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind students.

The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with low classroom ratios, career and vocational skill development, technology-based programming, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language.

In addition, the ENCSD offers a full-service boarding program for students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social / emotional well-being.

This is a full-time / 40 hours per week position that is located at the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf, in Wilson, NC.

This position is mandatory and essential to school operations and follows the 10-month Academic Calendar.

The major purpose of this position is to transport and monitor students to and from school daily driving a state vehicle (car, van, or activity bus) on established routes.

This position is also required to clean buses daily. An employee in this class operates a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the programs and offerings of the ENCSD.

Work involves performing pre-and post-trip inspections of the bus; obeying all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the bus;

observing all safety regulations and standards for school buses; and maintaining discipline of students assigned to ride the bus.

Employee is also responsible for completing all required reports and securing the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a route.

Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in maintaining acceptable relations with parents / guardians of students transported and with other school staff.

This position requires a flexible 40-hour week, Sunday through Friday schedule. Schedules will be determined by specific bus routes assigned;

typically, early morning and afternoon hours.

The selected candidate must possess a NC Dept of Motor Vehicles Driver’s License with a clean driving history. The following standards and qualifications will define a clean driving record.

  • Must be 18 years old;
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina’s driver’s license;
  • Must have had a valid driver’s license for a minimum of two years;
  • With 2-4 years total driving experience; no more than one ticket or at-fault accident during that period;
  • With 5-9 years total driving experience; no more than two tickets and two at fault accidents and one ticket during that period;
  • No convictions of DWI in the last 10 years and not more than one DWI conviction ever;
  • No convictions of reckless driving;
  • No suspensions of driving privileges in the last 10 years due to a moving (a violation suspension for failure to appear does not count);
  • Any prospective driver who has had a license in another state within the last five years must provide a driving record from that state as well as possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license at the applicant’s expense;
  • Not more than one conviction for a moving violation within the past 12 months and not more than 3 such convictions within the past 5 years;

ENCSD drivers who transport students must initially satisfactorily complete the behind wheel training, including skills tests, and classroom instruction, under the instruction of DMV trainers and Transportation Directors.

These drivers will be required to complete annual refreshers at the beginning of the school year.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Must possess a working knowledge of vehicle / equipment utilized in performance of daily tasks.

Must be able to recognize emergency situations and follow appropriate procedures.

Aptitude to pass written and road exams administered by DOT DMV.

Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a vehicle.

Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.

Capability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on a vehicle.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements : Must possess a NCDL license, maintain a clean driving record, and successfully obtain certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment on an annual basis.

All motor vehicle records are subject to the Federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (FDPPA) and General Statute (GS) 20-43.1.

Management Preferences : Previous experience operating a school bus or equivalent, a NC Commercial Driver’s License and possess skill in communicating using American Sign Language.
