The Design Engineering Unit supports the Control Drive Mechanism Test Facility, the Large Component Test Facility, and Pump and Component Quiet Test Loop, which perform high pressure / high temperature testing, mechanism testing, pump testing, steam testing and more.

The successful candidate would perform fluid-mechanical system and hardware design, ASME code calculations, piping flow and flexibility analyses, equipment selection and procurement, as well as oversee testing systems within the Laboratories.

The candidate would work with a diverse team of engineers, scientists, technicians, project managers, and vendors to deliver unique, one-off tests that support the Naval Reactors program.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

  • BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience or;
  • MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience or;

Currently or previously NPE qualified or CTE / ACRS and one year of EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and one year as SRE

Preferred Skills

Hardware design experience is preferred, but not required. Procedure writing experience is also preferred.

Job Description

Join the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, Fluids Laboratory Engineering unit in an Engineer role! The Fluids Laboratory Engineering unit in the Bettis Test Programs department is seeking a highly motivated mechanical engineer to join our team to improve existing systems and support the design and build of the future component testing!

The unit’s focus is to test scaled and full-size components installed in flowing test loops at specified thermal and hydraulic conditions. About the role :

  • Work with a diverse team of engineers, scientists, technicians, project managers, equipment vendors, and construction contractors to deliver several new and innovative component testing systems from concept design through to startup and testing operations.
  • Perform fluid-mechanical system and hardware design, ASME code calculations, piping flow and flexibility analyses, equipment selection and procurement, as well as oversee testing system installations in the fluids lab.
  • Pursue advances in technology, make decisions, and deliver results.
  • Create drawings for system design to support installation and operation.
  • Select, maintain, troubleshoot electro-mechanical devices (valves, pumps, heaters, heat exchangers, flow meters, pressure vessels, etc.).

This job also has opportunities to work within the existing fluids lab to gain hands-on testing experience, foster knowledge, and help identify improvements and disruptive technologies appropriate for incorporation into the future component testing.
