Solder Assembly Technician
As we continue to grow in our Camera Systems Group, Malin Space Science Systems is looking for another high-level Electronics Assembly Technician to work on Flight Hardware Systems under the direction of Production Manager or Production Management.
Job Duties
- Assemble electronic assemblies by following detailed procedures and utilizing solder assembly best practices.
- Creates and maintains detailed assembly records.
- Assists hardware engineers in assembly of prototype, flight electronics and cable harnesses, testing, troubleshooting, and integrating flight electronics with mechanical components.
- Performs other duties as required or requested which may become essential to this position.
Qualifications
- High-School Graduate / GED required. Some college or Trade School / ROP certification desired.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience.
- Excellent hand soldering, harness wiring, cable building, documentation, organization, and communication skills.
- Excellent attention to details and ability to work closely with each member of a production team.
- Results-oriented, self-motivated and dependable.
- Must read schematics and mechanical drawings.
- J-STD-001 Certification is required. With Space Addendum is preferred. Will be required to become NASA certified assembler.
- Must be computer literate with knowledge of MS Excel and Word.
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for a prolonged period of time. Manual dexterity as required for assembly. Good visual acuity, short and mid-range.
Walking, bending, reaching, and ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Ability to meet stressful deadlines. High attention to details, good communication both written and oral.
Mechanical Engineer
Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) is a private technology company that designs, develops and operates space camera systems.
As a member of our multidisciplinary space imaging systems design and production team, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical and thermal design of critical space-flight camera hardware, from design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly, through test, calibration and delivery.
In addition, assist in the development of proposals for future missions and / or to provide support to other engineering efforts.
Essential Functions
- Takes full ownership of the mechanical development of top-level flight hardware, beginning with preliminary design and proceeding through analysis, fabrication, assembly, integration, and test.
- Develops CAD models using Solidworks, integrating subcontractor CAD models of subassembly components, such as optics / mechanisms, with electronics and other mission-specific components like thermal hardware, dynamic isolators, or stray-light mitigation baffles.
- Designs thermal systems (in coordination with electronics designers) that meet requirements in planetary orbital and / or surface environments.
- Performs tolerance analysis for components and assemblies, ensuring components fit under worst-case conditions and customer requirements for optical alignment and mechanical interfaces are met.
- Drafts machined-part fabrication, assembly, and interface control drawings per MSSS conventions using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Designs the necessary fixtures and tooling to assemble and test hardware, working with technicians to determine needs and areas for improvement.
- Creates Structural Finite Element Models to perform modal, random vibration, and quasi-static analysis, ensuring component designs meet the environmental requirements of the mission.
- Using power input from electrical engineers, creates Thermal Finite Elements Models to analyze and predict electrical component temperature rises to support Electrical Part Stress Analysis.
- Performs sector analysis to analyze shielded radiation dose at internal electronics locations and modifies designs as needed to meet mass-efficiency dose requirements.
- Supports the procurement, fabrication, assembly, and inspection of designed parts and assemblies.
- Writes Instructions for Build, Assembly, and Test (IBATs), documenting the tooling, materials, assembly sequence, and necessary data recording for assembly of flight hardware.
- Writes test plans and procedures for random vibration and pyroshock simulation testing in accordance with mission-specific specifications.
- Carries out random vibration and pyroshock simulation testing, either at MSSS facility or external test facility, and writes test reports documenting test data and results.
- Investigates test failures or unforeseen issues that are encountered during manufacturing phase, including assessment of non-conformances found during receiving inspection or accidents / mistakes that occur during production.
- Documents design, analysis, and test results using Excel spreadsheets and Word documents.
- Generates presentation material using Powerpoint and presents mechanical design and analysis at customer-facing design reviews.
- Supports peers by reviewing drawings and working together to standardize design approaches across camera platforms.
- Travels to customers and / or vendors or test facilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Astronautical Engineering.
- 5 years relevant experience, preferably in the space or aerospace industry.
- SolidWorks CAD and Simulation skills are required.
- Occasional travel to customers and / or vendors may be required.
- Self-motivated and eager to take ownership of a science instrument that will launch to a planetary body to advance humanity’s scientific understanding.
- A passion for space exploration and planetary science.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to clearly articulate technical details in written reports and while presenting at technical design reviews.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to track and execute tasks with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work within a small, dynamic team environment, interfacing with multiple engineering disciplines to learn new skills in optical, electrical, and other fields.
Preferred Skills
- Experience using FEMAP with NX Nastran for structural analysis.
- Experience using Thermal Desktop for performing thermal analysis.
- Experience designing space mechanisms and / or optomechanical systems.
- Experience working with SolidWorks PDM Standard, Professional, or Enterprise experience desired.
- Experience with machining equipment (mill, lathe, CNC)
Physical Requirements
Must be able to remain in a stationary position operating a computer for periods of time, while handling multiple priorities simultaneously.
Must be able to communicate clearly with a variety of people on a daily basis. Occasionally moves about the office to access office machinery, lab spaces, and machine shop.
Must be able to use small hand tools as needed. Ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs. as needed. Possess mental acuity at a level which will facilitate execution of complex technical / engineering instructions.
Ability to handle high stress levels in connection with multiple conflicting priorities and deadlines. High tolerance for ambiguity and shifting expectations.
Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize workload. Ability to travel to customers and / or vendors locations.
