The Medical Assistant-Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) provides developmentally appropriate and age-specific (neonatal, infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, adolescent, young adult, middle adult, later adult) direct and indirect patient care within designated scope of practice.

Performs designated procedures, e.g., vital signs, ambulation, urine and stool specimen collection. Performs blood collection by phlebotomy and capillary puncture in a safe, accurate and professional manner.

Receives customers (e.g., patients, physicians, visitors). Interacts with all types of patients and visitors in a pleasant, efficient, and cooperative manner.

Monitors patients for unexpected reactions and responds to emergent situations, as required. Assists patients with positioning and transfer, e.

g., in and out of chair or bed, toileting; ensures privacy and modesty of patients. Transports patients to ancillary departments for diagnostic testing or interventions when requested.

Performs duties within scope of practice and in accordance with policies, procedures, and techniques; seeks information and clarification when necessary.

Follows policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines. Assists with ensuring efficient clinic operation and patient flow.

Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population.

Performs other duties as needed.

High School Diploma or GED required and successful completion of an approved Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program or completion of School of Nursing fundamentals required.

Minimum one year of previous experience in the clinic or acute care setting preferred.

Able to read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; operate patient care equipment necessary to the position;

perform basic patient care activities using proper body mechanics and safety precautions; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position.

  • Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following policies;
  • work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate with healthcare team; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English (and Spanish preferred) in person, in writing, and on the telephone;
  • think critically; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve;

organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; perform basic patient care duties under direction of a Registered Nurse or physician / nurse practitioner.

  • Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone;
  • identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place / patient care; discern temperature variances through touch;

see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to the position.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification required. Medical Assistant certification or Medical Assistant diploma or Certified Nursing Assistant or other healthcare training certificate required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
