A. FUNCTION OF POSITION

Provides Engineering support and leadership in the planning, design, and technical oversight of mechanical equipment and instrumentation in the test facilities at NASA Ames Research Center.

B. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - ENGINEERING SUPPORT

1. Develops plans, requirements, drawings and work instructions for implementing repairs, upgrades and modifications of the facility equipment, infrastructure, instrumentation and control systems.

2. Provides technical expertise to the users of the facilities in planning test projects to insure proper match of facility requirements with capabilities, balance of resources, and integration of schedules.

3. Provides technical expertise and guidance in overall planning, maintenance, and operation of assigned facilities.

4. Works with test engineers, facility management and customers to develop fixtures, holders, brackets, mechanisms, and other designs to accommodate new testing requirements.

5. Prepares documentation supporting facility development efforts.

6. Prepares specifications and purchase requisitions for facility hardware.

7. Writes Statements of Work (SOWs), performs job walks and manages subcontractors and subcontract work as needed.

C. NATURE OF POSITION CHALLENGES

Providing engineering support and leadership in the planning, preparation, and operation of tests at the facilities that meet project test requirements on schedule and within the budgeted resources.

D. SUPERVISOR GUIDANCE

Works under the general guidance of the Project Manager or Engineering Supervisor. Is responsible for executing projects within approved work plans and resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position

Visual and physical contact with test system hardware and installed test articles. Multiple workstation assignments (office, test facility, control room, laboratory, shops, etc.

Transportation of notebooks, drawings, forms, sensors, etc. required. Ability to hear normal conversation. One eye (minimum) correctable to 20 / 20.

Ability to distinguish eight colors on basic panel displays and wiring. Ability to manipulate small and delicate instruments and wiring.

Description of Work Environment

Work is accomplished in an office, control room, in and around test facility buildings, and within facility test chambers.

Movement is required between these work areas as well as trips to the client or user's facility. Must be able to use respiratory protection in confined spaces.

Some work areas are high in noise.

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks

Office and control room equipment includes computers, calculators, electronic instruments, mechanical instruments, and miscellaneous precision measuring devices.

May be required to drive government pickup truck to vendors to pick up materials or components or inspect on-going work.

Criticality of Attendance

Work assignments are usually during normal work hours ( 0800 - 1630), but overtime is sometimes necessary to support meetings, test schedules, and test operations.

A compressed schedule with 9 hour days and every other Friday off is available. Testing may occur any day or time of day, depending on test requirements.

Regular daily attendance is required to maintain team effectiveness.

Other Essential Functions

Provides technical supervision to assigned project personnel and assists management on administrative matters. Must be able to obtain a NASA badge and gain access to the work facilities.
