We are currently seeking a Mid-level Environmental Engineer in Boston to support a wide variety of environmental projects.

The preferred candidate will have extensive field and office experience working at Superfund and other contaminated sites (including Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) sites), as a task manager leading complex field programs, preparing planning documents and preparing reports for environmental characterization and remediation projects.

As a member of this team, you would contribute to CDM Smith's mission by :

  • Performing surface and subsurface soil sampling, rock classification, monitoring well installation, oversight of drilling contractors, groundwater sampling, and hydraulic testing to support environmental projects.
  • Performing geologic evaluations, and / or hydrogeological investigations; describing geologic conditions, and preparing logs, contour plots and cross-section diagrams.
  • Support National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit projects including; perform and coordinated monthly and quarterly storm-water sampling, outfall inspections, report preparation.
  • Reviewing draft assessments and calculations with respect to federal, state and local regulations.
  • Working on a variety of assignments, which may include work plans, field studies, research investigations, data interpretation and evaluation, and report preparation.

CDM Smith is seeking a talented scientist to join our team in our Bellevue Research and Testing Laboratory. This position involves conducting cutting edge treatability and laboratory research projects for a variety of clients across CDM Smith’s environment, water, PFAS, and energy markets.

The ideal candidate should be team-oriented and have a high attention to detail and should be comfortable independently executing experiments based on documented work plans and guidance from the project technical lead.

The ideal candidate should exhibit the following characteristics :

  • Good understanding of the current state of PFAS research as it relates to environmental, drinking water and wastewater applications.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting laboratory analytical instruments, including GC / MS, GC-FID / TCD, and IC, and evaluating the analytical data.
  • Some experience with chromatograph (GC / IC / HPLC) is a plus
  • Experience adhering to budget, scope, and schedule constraints.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of chemical and biological hazards and considerations at the laboratory scale.
  • Good understanding of redox chemistry, as it relates to environmental engineering. Ability to balance redox reactions and perform electron balances.

Understanding of the applications to disinfection, ISCO, or abiotic remediation a plus.

  • Demonstrated technical writing skills (reports) is a plus.
  • Independent data analysis and interpretation experience is a plus.
  • Experience building reactors / columns / other experimental apparati is a plus.
  • Experience in running UV, ozone, and / or other water treatment tests at the bench scale study level is a plus.
  • Experience with projects funded through basic and applied research programs such as SERDP and ESTCP is a plus

CDM Smith's Environmental Services Group is seeking an environmental engineer with Sediment Remediation experience to be located at the CDM Smith Portland Oregon office.

The candidate must have demonstrated expertise working independently, leading a team of engineers and scientists, and / or managing tasks on sediment remediation projects for a variety of clients.

These projects will ideally have involved interactions with and / or working for Federal and Public sector regulatory agencies.

Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following regarding sediment remediation projects :

  • Providing expertise in evaluating the feasibility of sediment remediation technologies and preparing sediment remediation designs for large riverine and coastal sites involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Understanding the scientific and engineering principles of sediment and contaminant transport, environmental site assessment, sampling technologies, cap modeling, and remedial action design.
  • Providing support of mathematical / statistical evaluations of environmental data sets.
  • Serving as CDM Smith’s task manager on various components of complicated sediments sites. This includes having the ability to assess and understand a problem, develop and communicate a technical strategy to the client, and interact effectively with CDM Smith subject matter experts.
  • Serving as a technical liaison with the client, communicating complicated technical evaluations and designs to non-subject matter experts.
  • Leading other staff in preparing / reviewing / scrutinizing technical information to provide a document that is technically sound and that conforms to applicable regulations and policy.

In addition to possessing sediments expertise and experience, this candidate shall support CDM Smith's environmental remediation team.

This will involve similar roles described above, but they may be applied at non-sediments sites such as groundwater plumes or terrestrial contamination.
